One can only defeat so many villains that want to "cover the world in darkness" before one starts to look for a different flavor of horrible.

Most of the other old men I talk to about life discuss defining days that separated their lives into a before and after. My life does not have any such days, no single event changed the way I lived my life. This life of mine is one unbroken field, different crops have been planted and reaped, but the ground has remained the same. There is one day though that scars that field like a stump or stone that cannot be plowed under. I have spent many seasons pondering that day, but have never found a comfortable place for it.

Parna is a human nation in a fantasy realm. This is an outsider’s description of that nation with a focus and the cultural and the ethnic groups within the nation.
A town is besieged by a changing culture and is desperate to hold on to its oldways. But that gets harder as the next generation starts to leave the traditions behind. The drive of some people to resist change and hold on to what they have is so great that they will not only fightthe undead but eventually embrace them.
The Priests of Droven are as near a thing the Dwarf city states of the Ven (Barrier) Mountains have to a central government. They enforce laws, arbitrate disputes, monitor trade, intern the dead and in all ways keep chaos at bay.
A magical relic is stolen which has the power to raise the dead. The dead roused by this item are twisted tormented beings but are also elevated to a power befitting their earthly accomplishments. The PCs are charged with retrieving this item, but before they can safely secure it has already been used to raise the legendary King Parna who carved out the Kingdom by his spear and wits alone and his two most famous companions. Now the PCs must not only contain the relic, but save the realm for these new and powerful undead.
Imagine if King Arthur, Merlin and Lancelot were brought back as powerful undead.
In a high canyon in the mountains, the players find a skeleton in a cage suspended from a pole. A few miles further, they find another, and a third contains a partially rotten corpse. The fourth contains a living man who looks as if he hasn't eaten in days. Turns out to be the local way of punishing criminals.
