Matter Samplers pull in cosmic dust and then analyzes the nature of particles. These artificial noses allow ships to track debris fields, certain exhaust trails, and do a cursory analysis of the elemental and mineral make up of the surrounding planetary and material bodies. Most Samplers provide information about relative particle density as well as sorting particles by volume, mass, radiation out put, charge and momentum. Sophisticated samplers use mass spectrometry to determine the atomic make up, and quark busting to analyze the subatomic decay. Subatomic decay analysis determines an atom's actual age and its' relative point of galactic origin.
