Estate Sale - Lot 14

“And now Ladies, Lords, and Gentlemen,” I bring your attention to Lot 14. This is hodgepodge of personal effects that I am sure you will find interesting. If you see anything that peaks your interest, buy it and the entire lot for cheap. Now I start the bidding at .....”

Beautiful Chess set: A beautiful set of “ivory” chess pieces, actually carved from human bone.

The bedspread of nightmares: If someone sleeps beneath it they will have nightmares, initially quite mild but which get worse the more nights they sleep under the bedspread.

The Pictureframe of Souls: Any portrait in this frame will change, bit by bit, over the course of a week to reveal the current state of the souls of anyone in it. The cultist used it to find True Innocents to sacrifice.

Butterknife of paralysis: Doesn’t do any more damage than a regular butterknife, but someone being cut with this can’t do anything but watch you saw into them very slowly. This is from a wish made to a demon long agon. The wisher is long dead, dammed to hell, the butterknife is still here.

The Locket: Beautifully made from shining gold, this locket would be a perfect gift for the wife, girlfriend, mother or daughter of a nobleman, but for one hitch: It’s welded shut.

Essentially, a really nasty demon is bound in the locket, to give strength to the cultist. If the locket is ever actually opened, boom, he comes out and tries to kill everything. He wants revenge. Perfect thing for a PC to give a love interest…

I like the butter knife, could I buy it from you? I have quite a few people I would love to use it on.

Man. The GSFH codex is a large one, and one I know almost everyone on Strolen's likes. So why is there only one vote on this entry?

I think there could be more done with it than just these few items though. Nice job on them though.

More people should vote for this I think.

Well, while the items are not bad, it's still just a bunch of one-liners defined by their master codex.

I like the Butterknife of paralysis most, it has a distinctive creepiness.

Some interesting nuggets here.

The Lots are "clean up" from the various entries when this was a forum submission. There was a lot of crap just tossed into it, and this was the all the "straight" ones from various sources. Still, there are some jems in "the lots".

Still, I would rather have "A lot" of short items than nothing at all for the Garage Sale.

Oh, no objection to their existence. I just think they would probably look better as scroll entries nowadays.

Personally, I'm finding I like Scroll entries a lot less then I used to. They are hard to reuse and their content is rather hidden. Something like a super-lightweight stub would be nice - it would look like a scroll entry, but be stand alone so it could exist in many subs at the same time.

Hmmm... if I remember correctly that was one of the options we have considered for Stubs. Post it into the appropriate thread, we may have to extend them.

The old clock tower stands tall, but the bulk of the uppermost storey is crumbling and unsafe, with gaping cracks in the walls. The metal struts and girders supporting the great bronze bells are still intact, though, and the bells survive. The grotesque gargoyles and arabesques which decorated the original design have either fallen into the street (once or twice a year more bricks fall from the tower, prompting calls for its demolition) or have been defaced, but the main doors to the clock tower are still intact and show signs of being kept in working order. This is the home of The Captains, clad in raggedy clothes, with sooty faces, and perpetually runny noses. But behind each set of eyes is the look of a survivor. They live to stick together and make it through each day. Older than their years in many ways, the friendship they share with each other and Wims ghost keeps the core of a childs innocence and hope alive in each. But they are still very suspicious of outsiders. They are a group of street children who live in the clock tower. Some are orphans, some runaways, and some nomads who occasionally return to their homes. But they’re all poor, dirty and perpetually hungry, as well as being wily, unscrupulous and mischievous in a fairly brutal way. Enough of them have suffered at the hands of adults for all of them to be wary of any grown-ups, particularly ones who ask too many questions, although with hard work and a lot of food it might be possible to win the confidence or even the trust of a few of them.
