Torren Mangrove

“Evil” often infests swamp. This tree thrives when the other plants wither under the presence of true Evil. However, this is not an evil plant, but a land healing one as nature attempts to reclaim its own.

The mangroves are widely distributed throughout the tropics and the warmer ends of moderate climes, growing in areas of salt water, such as tidal shores and marshes. The Torren Mangrove grow in areas where “dark forces” have been known to inhabit.

The many arching aerial roots make dense tangles that stabilize the surrounding soil, prop the tree, and assist in absorbing water and minerals. The Torren Mangrove draws up liquids and salts from the water into its longish leaves. There, the liquid seems to “evaporate”, leaving behind salt crystals.  These crystals protect the plant from animal predation and “negative” vibrations. So while other plants may wilt and decay under dark influences, the Torren Mangrove will thrive.

In addition to being a salt source and a purifier of evil energies, Mangrove bark is an important source of tannin, used in tanning, dyeing, making ink, and medicine.

So it makes tiny crystals that produce "positive" vibrations (or protect from the negative ones)? Go Feng-shui! :)

But seriously, witches and druids would surely gather those crystals. Pity you need so many to achieve any real effect.

I had not thought about harvesting the "evil absorbing" salt. There is a component for enchantments that could come in handy.

Reminds me of the GM plants that can make over-salinated soils good again.

That is what some Mangroves do. :)

Useful perhaps for reducing the evil in an area over decades.

The whole point of the trees actually, Nature's way of stopping evil taint.

Another tree that if those with woodlore make the check, they will know they are entering the edge of "evil".

Also these trees do grow in areas without taint as well, just not in numbers. That way tannin can be collected from them.

Then clearly, this is the plant druids would be planting all over tainted locations.

"Come into life, little bud, and outgrow the Evil that has spoiled this place."

Exactly. Druids have the job of making nature strong, thus removing Evils taint or an overly strong Good Presence (which is normally just as bad for the natural order). However, Good tends not to twist nature. Thus the trees will be an important thing.

And these trees will be interesting to those of the evil bent, too - they show the 'places of interest'. How else would you find where that sorcerous battle was raged two centuries ago?

If too many crystals were harvested it might hurt or kill the plant.

A neat idea -a good start on something that can be more substantial.

the dead mechent of death

To Dougles Nye money is power, a powerful wizard only newly into lich-hood

Originally the son of servants to a noble family, yet he found that life humiliating. "How could anyone stand to serve another?" he often wondered. His father, was a greedy man who offered an explanation one day “It’s all for the coin, every demanding, humiliating thing. It’s for the coin, boy."

So when Dougles began developing the potential for magic, he found a way out of a life of servitude. Learning magic though stolen books, he made his escape. Taking the all the possessions of the lord’s vaults with him. He set out to gain as much money as possible.

His gifts for magic allowed him many advantages other merchants could only dream of. Capitalized on the use of deviation magic, allowing him to always having what the city he is in needs most, whether that is wheat or weapons, poison or drug doesn’t matter to him.

Some would say he follows war, disease, famine, and political strife like a vulture looking for a nice carcass to claim. What they don’t know is he has a hand in the conflict he supposedly follows. Assassinating ruler to incite wars, casting spells that decimating crops, acting as an information broker to both sides in a conflict. Dougles is known as a man who can get what you need to some, to other a monster who capitalizes on the suffering of others.

The lich know as Dougles Nye, prefers the title ”The Merchant of Death” for that shows just how much power money has earned him.
