The Hulan


‘‘I am so very sorry to interupt your grand schemes for seizing control of the nether-realm, but I am afraid that my master, the Lord of the Desolate Shore, has raised some serious objections..’’

Full Description

In the lost tounge of Atlos, Hulan means ‘‘Enforcer or executioner’‘. These demons work for no less than the great arch fiends themselves. Their job is to punish those lesser demons that grow too big for their boots and aspire to turn their backs on the powerful overlords that reign supreme over all. To this end,  they are fearsome assasins that are much feared by other kinds of fiends.

Each Hulan demon is a seven foot tall being covered in oval adamantium plates that have been sewn into his leathery green hide. They cannot be ripped off by any physical means, being enchanted to survive even the strongest effort to pry them off. Only a powerful force of magic can deprive a Hulan of his armor. The twin bull like horns growing from his head are also encased in adamantium to make them deadly weapons if need be, as are the scythe shaped claws that protrude from the eight tapering fingers found on each hand. The eight foot long tounge that lolls from the gaping maw of his mouth is covered with millions of tiny little razors that can strip off the hide of any lesser demon. However, he seldom has need to rely on on this arsenal of secondary weapons, depending almost soley on his dazzling skill with his twin blades to polish off his foes. These blades harbor a shred of the essence of the awesome arch demons themselves, making them particularly deadly to other demons. When brought into contact with demon flesh, the powerful presence in the sword blades immediately begin to feed on the twisted malice and evil inherent in their victim, draining the fiend of his life force and leaving him an empty withered corpse. Imps and other lesser demons call these dread blades Ushol, which in Demonspeak means ‘‘Sucking death.’‘

The Hulan always works alone, seeing no need for help of any kind and having absolute confidence in his ability to carry out the hit his powerful masters have given him. He is silent and swift, dissolving into the shadows to conceal his presence from his unsuspecting quarry. Totally loyal and dedicated, he sees his task as a sacred duty and cannot be bribed or bought off, impervious to the wiles of those he hunts.
But there is one thing that can defeat him utterly. The Hulan is in truth, a former human cultist who has served his demon god with the utmost fidelity in his mortal existance. As a a reward for his loyalty as a mortal, he has been made an enforcer of the will of his demonic lord in the after-life. But this means that some elements of human vulnerability exists in them. If confronted with a sentimental or personal object from their mortal childhood or infancy, they find themselves thinking with yearning of a time when they still knew what it meant to be human. Should this ever happen, their masters become enraged and devour the souls of their errant servants.

For this reason, the most dedicated demon worshippers that aspire to become Hulan enforcers, are careful to destroy anything from their past that might pose a threat to their future career in Hell.

Hmmm... very powerful demons, that would have little contact with mortals, if at all. Their weakness is a nice addition.

The weakness is almost mandatory as otherwise the Hulan would be too powerful. This brings up an interesting idea of an all demon campaign, something set in the layers of hell...bizarre

Devious little things... or not so little being that big. I like them. Curious to know if any of them have or can ever escape once the yearning fills them of their past? A rogue Hulan running about seeking vengence?

Not an unlikely possibility, but they'd have to do their best to stay clear of their former colleauges. The other hounds that still remain true to their lord, would be rattled enough by the defection to go to great lengths not to dissapoint when it comes to apprehanding the traitor.

Very nice! Part of me dislikes the adamantium parts, and I'm not sure why, when I use this I might have to change it. But Scras's Campaign in Hell is a grand idea begging to be used.

This is a great member of the array of Demons. I like Scras's comment about a demonic campaign. That would be worth doing...

In nature, for instance, a rhino has flies and ticks etc, that live on the hide and live off the blood. Rhino will visit and lie in ponds where turtles will clean the underwater portion of the ticks and a species of bird will clean the the top of ticks and other parasites. What if where the characters camp there were a species of animals that lived off wounds of the creatures. PCs camp. Anybody with wounds on there body are soon covered with small rodent - insect - shadows - whatever. Would immediately see it as a threat I would imagine. But perhaps one of the wounded didn't wake up when it happened, and when they did finally wake they were completely healed. Perhaps somebody was warned of something attacking them but they were able to notice that the wound was actually getting smaller instead of larger. Or maybe they successfully beat the creatures off them and don't notice an improvement, marking this place never to rest at ever again....later learn that villagers send their wounded there but they keep it a guarded secret because they don't want all the attention or traffic and what comes with such a special gift. Could turn into something more too if characters decide to start blabbing about it.
