Demon Bang
By: Strolen , Ancient Gamer

A large explosion was heard 4 days ago coming from the foot of the nearby mountains. Ever since then no trade wagons have come through as they usually did.

A large explosion was heard 4 days ago coming from the foot of the nearby mountains. Ever since then no trade wagons have come through as they usually did. Investigation finds that the wagons and traders, by the look of their path, have just disappeared. The sound actually came from a necromancer that summoned a greater demon and lost control of it, and lost his own life. The huge demon is hungry for souls but isn’t strong enough to attack a city yet. Can only be harmed with magic weapons but is still very weak from breaking the bond with the necromancer.

Bit of a paradox there. Strong yet weak. Ok, but how is it strong and how is it weak?

Weak from it's fight with the necromancer and possibaly it's journey to this place is good, but is there anything specific about it weaknesses that could be helpful? Can only be hit by magical weapons isn't a very weak defense, unless it can't heal the damage because of it's weakened state.

Strong in what way? Since the Wagons and travelers seem to be vanishing, does it have a disintegreation attack? What is it doing that makes an entire caravan disapppear without anyone raising an alarm or any animals panicing?

Seems like a way to make a powerful foe more approachable by lower level characters. While one or more of them may get crushed by the creature, they won't have an overly difficult time of dispatching it. I don't think defeating a weakened creature should have all the benifits of one at full power and would only reward reduced experience and such.

Actualy I feel it is a pretty good idea.

All the questions Agar raised have their validity, but just make this a very usable plot. The DM can simply fill out the answers and of course he will have to reduce the award for beating this demon. Remember that XP usualy depends on the CR.

On the other hand defeating the monster has great awards, as it will probably be very benificial in none XP areas. I can imagne the traders and the city people are gratefull, so they might be much more willing to help the PC's achieve other goals.

So it is not only a good way to make a high level monster more approachable for lower level characters, it is also a nice way to give players the opertunity to "solve" the problems they may have with some city (due to stupid moves made in the past.)
It might be a great way to give a group of novice players a second chance at getting something.

This'n is a golden oldie.
Very basic, but very good and concise... Easily useable.

With today's standards, you are right. But considering it was the 3rd post ever on the site almost 6 years ago, it will stay for its historical significance. All my old ones suck so don't look too hard. :)

I love the title on this one. Though one has to wonder why a Necromancer would summon a Demon? Makes me think of undead infused with Demonic essences, powerful and unstable, hungering for the souls and flesh of the living. This a great oldie, thanks for dragging it out of its grave, Cheka.

I think this could even be used as the start point of a campaign, if the demon on remains long enough to scare the bejesus out of the PC's.

Other aftereffects of this occurrence could then make things move very quickly.  Perhaps the PCs have seen far too much and there are those who would seek to silence them.

"Demon Bang" It sounds like the title to an especially lewed bards tale, involving no small amount of Succubi. :P

Title aside this is a quick little adventure seed that can be tossed in almost anywhere as filler when the GM needs a quick adventure/encounter to occupy the party while she comes up with the next piece of the campaign.

The babies of a small village has been disappearing lately, rumour has it that a demon living in the forest has taken them. The monster has the appearance of a shriveled old woman. A hag, disheveled, with maniacal appearance, wild-looking hair, and an oversized gaping mouth. Long pendelous breasts. The villagers say she eats the newborns and has sharp claws that are created for mangling. No one dears to challenge her, enter the PCs.
