7 Fishing Lines
Dry material here, I have no idea the history of fishing line but we're both going to learn
1. Braided Cordage
STR: 1
Braided Cordage is a relatively thick line made of braided plant material, longish hair, and whatever else can be found. Not very durable, not long lasting, and a precursor to better fishing line, rope, and nets. Most goblinoids and low tech demihumans are using braided cordage. In the fishing mini-game this limits them to fishing poles, and on the low end. Having a Strength 3 pole doesn't mean much with strength 1 line.
2. Horsehair Twine
STR: 2
Made from braiding the long filaments of horse hair together into a line. Longer lasting and more durable that raw fibrous plant matter. Nomads, basic level demihumans, and subsistence level settlements will use this, though in a fantasy setting the long hair might come from animals other than horses, such as wooly creatures, centaurs, and so forth.
3. Linen Line
STR: 3
Made from flax, this is the go to line for agrarian settlements and demihumans, as they are likely already growing flax to make linen cloth and flax seed. As weaving and spinning technology increase, longer and better linen line can be made, which makes for better knots, and access to more hooks, baits, and lures.
4. Composite Line
STR: 3+
Made from a composite blend of horsehair and linen, it is the best natural fishing line that can be made. When making strength checks, a composite line rerolls 1 critical fail. This is not per scene or day, but one in the lifetime of the line.
This is the point in human history where natural materials were supplanted by synthetic materials like nylon, which remains the go-to material for fishing line even in the 21st century. As there is no place for plastics, viynls, and polymers in fantasy, this is where real life ends, and fantasy takes over.
5. Spunsilk Line
STR: 5
Real silk comes from silkworms, insect larva smaller than a human finger. The DungeonVerse makes use of megafauna insects (cough cough pokemon cough cough) so there are insect larve that not centimeters long, but inches long, feet long. These jumbo bogs are used to produce silk, and where the silk can be made into cloth, it can be made into cord, and it can be made into line. This is a labor intensive process, expensive, but produces a reliable source of excellent fishing line. River rangers and others who make a living dueling dangerous fish pay good coin for spunsilk.
6. Spiderkin Silk Line
STR: 8
Aranea, drivers, etterings, spiderkin, there are plenty of sentient spider creatures, and they can be convinced, coerced, or otherwise brought to spin line from their silk glands, creating the line straight from the source without all the spinning, carding, and twisting required to make insect larva silk into a usable form. The spiderfolk aware of this desire for their glandular product can make themselves quite comfortable as a reliable if not locally popular source of fishing line.
7. Celestial Silk
STR: 10+
This fishing line appears on legendary fishing rods and poles. While most have no idea where it comes from, in the celestial realm most know that this valuable material comes from holy spiders that dwell in the spaces between places.
