Astria Rayne

Being an artisan first and a merchant second afford Astria a measure of wealth and independence. She specializes in creating jewelry and art pieces with semi-precious/precious stones and metals. Most of her income comes from works commissioned by the wealthy denizens of Widow's Edge and the surrounding towns. She also owns and operations a little curio shop.

At first glance Astria appears to be just what she projects the artsy shop owner with a hello and smile for all that she encounter. If one were to look closer they would see the energy that pulses around her, the alertness in eyes, the readiness to act at a moments notice. Astria is more than a mere shop owner; she really returned to Widow's Edge to investigate the attacks on the towns that started when she was a child and claimed the life of her father. During the daylight hours she works as jewelry/art maker but when darkness falls she slides into the night like others slide into clothes. Astria's mode of dress when doing her nightly patrols is a black shirt, black pants and black suede boots. She also wears a black scarf and veil to hide her hair and face. Her weapons of choice is the katana sword, which she wears, strapped to her back and a set of seven throwing knives that are secured to her upper right thigh by a leather strap. During the daylight hours the weapons are cleverly hidden under her clothes.

“ King dresses as a commoner occasionaly and makes his way through the town. It is an unknown occurance so nobody expects it. This time he is mistaken for a thief and jailed. Not wanted to reveal himself, and always curious for the experience, he allows himself to be arrested. PCs also get arrested for something, probably guilty but pay a fine. How they act towards the 'king' could greatly change how their first meeting will be as the players always meet the king at some point.”

“ These rare, fist-sized spiders do not make webs, but rather excrete secretions which harden upon contact with air. These 'droppings' resemble barley-sized spider eggs, or even lustrous pearls, once the slime coating them, dries up. In fact, dried Pearl Spider 'drops' are indistinguishable from the marine varieties produced by mollusks, and hence of identical value on the open market! Several centuries ago, they were studied by naturalists, and several observations were made. Firstly, was that these spiders 'lay' these pearls for no apparent or discernible 'natural' reason, and secondly, the naturalists had discovered that the more these spiders ate or were fed--and they were true omnivores--the larger the spider pearls came out. A cottage industry began. Enterprising merchants hunted and collected these creatures across the lands, erecting spider-farms for the manufacture of Spider Pearls. It wasn't long before someone got the idea to force-feed the spiders, ala foie gras geese, and soon, the fattened spiders began pooping out pearls of great size! (relatively speaking). The regular pearl market came to disarray, and prices and value fluctuated wildly. Plothook The Mermen Mercantile Alliance hires the party to eradicate all terrestrial Pearl Spider Farms!”

“ Arakis's zombie problem went largely ignored, because it was believed that the Shai-Hulud (sand worms) would effectively dispose of the undead walkers. Unfortunately the problem grew until the roving herds of sunburnt ghouls threatened the flow of spice. While observing one of the great reanimated masses over take a Harvester from the safety of an ornithopter, an Imperial Zoologists noted that the sand caked flesh eating revenants walked entirely without rhythm. Shortly after receiving this report the Bene Gesserits claimed to have a solution to Arakis's hellish resurrections. They asserted to the agents of the great houses that the worms could be drawn to the walkers using an ancient sonic weapon. According to the sisters, exposing the zombies to an antediluvian ballad composed by the great master M. Jackson would force them to step in time.”
