The Smellbinders

By:

"Aww, dang, did you fart again?" asked the Jordy, The Knight.
"No, screw you! I didn’t fart in the first place!" replied The Scoundrel, Harris. What they didn’t know was that the Smelbinders could hear their every word.

The Mystically Stinky, the Summoners of Stank, The Smellbinders revel is all that is rank…

The Smellbinders are a recent addition to your society of outlandish magics. Only now have the powers of stenches revealed themselves to the worthy few. There is not much history to this order of mages. They came into existence a few years after the cataclysm/great war/other disaster and have not grown much. Their members include mostly primitive magic users from the Smelly-Bog Goblin Tribe, the Orcs of Ever-stink Mountain, and/or Gag-Master’s Troglodyte Clan. But a few of the less respected city-dwelling magic-users have also joined the cabal.

The powers they possess are the powers of the nose. They can shape smells like clay, even transport them and use them for greater magics. A few of their powers include:
- A Nauseating Gas Cloud that can be moved around for maximum effect. It usually covers about a 10ft cube, but can vary depending on the skill of the mage.
- Remote Viewing of any place the mage has left his scent. Little is known about this powerful power other than the area must smell bad and the mage must meditate to view the area.
- They can Ward an area against normal/non-magical animals.
-They can nullify scents or increase a beings sensitivity to certain scents, even creating permanent allergies in extreme cases.

Long term goals include: Turning the world into a stinking wasteland where they rule supreme.

Short term goals: Converting the lesser beings of the world into loyal minions of The Smellbinders.

They meet in secret caves or forested locations monthly to discuss what new uses they have discovered for their powers and talk about upcoming social/anti-social events.

I really like the idea behind this! You could use these guys to introduce a powerful comic element in any plot-line that is threatening to become too dramatic. But some details on the way the society operates and the heirachy that rules it, should one exist, would have added substantially to this sub.

I'm not really sure what to say, I want to roast this submission for being short, and strange and kind of strung out like a ritalin junkie itching for another hit of the good stuff. Irony points out that there are the same reasons that I actually really really like this post. This submissin has given me quite a few ideas. Here, have a mediocre score (3/5) and a HoH for making me HaH!

I hope you don't mind, but I linked two subs that this one inspired plus have added three more submissions with the Smelly freetext. Also, changed the Mages freetext to School of Magic.

What an entertaining group, they have certainly use. The writeup could be indeed better, but it gets the message across. (The freetexts - besides silly - should be better chosen, however.)

Speaking of the "powers of the nose", it seems that a sensitive nose would be the first prerequisite to be become such a spellcaster... and the first sense they eventually lose after too much exposure. So add an "Empower Nose" power to the effects. :)

This is a good idea, but I feel the execution could have been better. I love the idea of using smell in games, something I often do, and I absolutely adore the notion of smell magic.

This is how I felt. You have a diamond in the rough here. I hope you work more on it!

This comment has been edited. Thanks to Pieh for telling me what proper, and what is not. :)

Not much to say that hasnt been said already. Great idea, the write-up is a bit too frivolous and off-the-cuff, which is ok, i guess, but this could have been presented differently, with more detail and less silliness, and would have rocked!

The concept is a good one however! Look how much smelliness this sub has generated already! :)

HA! Fun to think about. Scared of their final view of the world and hope they don't ever meet that goal!

Have a cold?

       By: MoonHunter

When was the last time a character caught a cold or flu? Real people get them every now and again even with solid heating and dry interiors. Your characters are out in the cold and wet, and even inside is not always dry and warm. Imagine having to stop your dungeon crawl, sitting in a tight defensive position, while you all are feverish.
