The Son's of The Panther (A Tale of Mysantia)

The powerful barbaric spawn of The Panther God

Freetext Friday barbarian (but mostly because I can't sleep)

Long ago, it is said, The Panther God invested in a small group of mortals, a bit of his essence, to combat the forces of the Elder Gods. That power lingers on today.

At the height of his power, the god-king Jotan marshaled his forces, crushing the combined might of the Serpent Men and the Deep Ones. But alas, it was a Pyrrhic victory , that left Jotan's army nearly as depleted as his foes. The god king cast about for a way out of this and appealed to the fickle Panther God for aid.Instead of directly giving troops or magical aid, The Panther God created a race , based on man , that would battle the common foes and give him the worship he felt he deserved.

Deep in the jungle of Skull Island, (once the main fortress of the Serpent Men) The Panther God breathed life into a man and 3 women. Imbibed with both his savagery and his magic, these became the first Son's of the Panther. The first Son's were a mix of barbarian and spontaneously spellcasting sorcerers( The only arcane spellcasters that need not rely on spellbooks and memorization). Once creating them, the fickle Panther left them to their own devices, forgetting the necessity of having a priesthood.

Within only 10 generations , veneration of the Panther was forgotten and his barbarians forgot their mission to combat the Old Ones and their minions. The Son's had become soft and enjoyed the fine living associated with mercantile pursuits. The Panther God became enraged and stripped his children of the ability of spellcasting, forbade the wearing of armor, and destroyed the cities that they had built, casting them once more into the jungle. In order to survive they rediscovered their barbaric roots, never again failed to venerate their creator and their women developed miraculous healing powers.

The Son's are tall, strong, fair skinned and long black Hair. What sets them apart are their cats eyes and formidable canine teeth.

The males have unperelled skill with greatswords and the females get by with daggers and clubs.

Only one village remains on Skull Island, surrounded by a thick forest of giant spiders and their webs. But such is the power of the Son's, that their ability in battle and berserk fury is known the world over. Several notable Son's gained fame during Dragon Mating Season and the more recent Deep One incursion. The Panther God has rewarded his now faithful followers, with a select few of them regaining their sorcerous power. But a seemly harmless act has endangered them once again.

Keltos Friend Slayer, the archwizard of the plane, has started growing magical healing gangi at the village. Smoking the herb is already starting to make the village fat and lazy, comfortably surrounded by their spider protectors. Unless the herb fields are destroyed, the Son's may yet again feel the wrath of the Panther God.

I think that there's something here, but it could still use some work. I think I'd like to see them either distilled down a bit more, or else expanded a bit further. As is, I feel like there's just enough there for them to seem kind of generic.

Woodrats - In a fantasy realm of cooshee (elven dogs/cats) it is to be expected that there is some sort of elven vermin. These mercurial rats are lightning quick, and are capable of hiding in plain sight. Other than this, they have no special ability.
