1-The Red Baron

On a world with a long, bloodstained World War One style war grinding away on the ground, there is still a certain amount of the “ romance of war “ left in the air, if only because the casualties of the war don’t hang about in the air and decompose but crash to the ground instead. There are tales of the Red Baron sparing opponents whose guns have jammed or run out of ammunition, but except for one time early in the war when it had not lasted long enough to generate much bitterness, this is a myth. The Red Baron is generally merciless to the enemy, although he refrains from machine gunning or bombing civilians or non- military targets.

2-The Secret Pilot

He lives in a secret military base that he rarely leaves, and his missions are highly classified and are carried out with a highly modern spy plane. A lot of them are just photo reconnaissance missions, but he has also helped high ranking defectors escape from their oppressive governments, flown in special forces to target and kill or rendition alleged terrorists, and bombed at least one dam against the rules of war, and in a plane of a country that his government wished to frame up as war criminals.

He has been told more than once that if he crashes behind enemy lines and survives he is on his own and his government will deny all knowledge of his existence even if it means he gets executed.

3-The Partizan

His country was successfully invaded by an unpleasant dictator and he managed to hide his plane in a barn under bales of straw. He has used it to attack the dictator’s personal convoy, killing his son and heir, flown the flag of his country over the capital on it’s national day for propaganda purposes, flown dissidents to safety abroad and other such things, and is the most wanted resistance leader with a huge price on his head and on his iconic plane.

4-The False Ace

A famous air ace has been shot down, and because of the negative effects on morale it has been kept a military secret and somebody else has been dressed as him and given a plane like his. He lacks the same military skills in dogfighting, so is likely to get shot down and killed or taken as a prisoner of war sooner or later.

5-The Myth

He supposingly shot down six planes of the enemy in a single day, and at least some of the enemy pilots are scared of meeting up with him in the sky, but he doesn’t even exist in real life. His role is as a morale booster for the people of his country who are facing what seems like near impossible odds.

6-The Dam Buster

Either the laws of war are very different in his world, or he is one of the most hated war criminals ever and will be executed if his nation loses the war that it is in, but he specialises in bombing dams to destroy the nearby towns and factories with huge floods. One of these is thought to have drowned over a hundred thousand civilians, who had to be piled into mass graves, ( in a country where the main religion disposes of the dead through cremation) because all the wood in the area was rendered too wet to burn and the crematoria was flooded and destroyed.

7-The Acrobat

Before the war broke out he was a stunt pilot who was facing some charges in court for flying too low, but these charges were dropped when the war broke out on the condition that he put his skills to good use for the air force of his country. Either he will become a flying ace and famous within a month or so, or he will get shot down and earn himself a coffin instead, but he is confident of success and that his country will win this war quickly.
