Frost Thorn

By:

An evershifting blade of ice, this is the weapon gifted to the chosen of the three-aspected goddess of water.

The normal, material form of the Frost Thorn is quite unimposing. In its most recent incarnation, it is a thin bracelet, a chain of ice carven into the shape of thorns. It radiates with a chilling aura, as if to demanding that it be kept forever within the winter snows.

The Frost Thorn was born from the ice of the glacier, manifested when Crysheth, the Avatar of Ice, found Celsia Frostblossom frozen, yet still alive, within the that glacier, and took her as a servant in the mortal realm. She knew that her new warrior would require arms, and so she gave her the Frost Thorn and the Glacier Mail as gifts, so that Celsia might serve her better.

Magical Properties:

However, the Frost Thorn is far more than a simple bracer. At will, the wearer may cause it to manifest a weapon. This weapon is of whatever the wearer wishes or prefers. Any rigid melee weapon and shield combination is possible, from a cestus to a lochaber, but any weapon that involves combustion in any form is right out or flexibility. Sorry, no frost arquebuses.

In any of its forms, the weapons created by the Frost Thorn share certain similiar traits. First, despite their icy construction, the frozen weapons are of a strength similiar to that of the finest steels, and cutting edges are always exquistely sharp. The weapons manifested are also deeply enchanted, capable of harming the grand majority of magical creatures. Each weapon also carries with it a deep, arctic chill, and this chill will find its way into the wounds the weapon creates. Finally, those slain by the Frost Thorn are frozen through out, until such a time as moderate magical effort is put into the unthawing.

The current bearer of the Frost Thorn, Celsia Frostblossom, generally prefers to manifest her weapon as an elven longsword.

As any combination of weapons and shield is possible, I think this item is much too powerfull.
Imagine a barbarian wielding this thing and transforming it into a huge shield and a great-axe. Now some may say that wielding a great-axe in one hand is impossible, but with the propper training this is possible....

Besides that, this weapon eliminates the need to carry multiple weapons for different situations, which makes the player too flexible. In most RPG's, I am afraid this item would simply be too unbalancing to ever end up in players hands.

This item sounds more like something for an avatar of a god to carry, and the story presented here seems to reflect that. For this purpose, it is fine and good; For something an adventurer to carry, it is overpowerful.

This item can be easily tuned down to a more reasonable state for an adventurer. It currently allows anything from an armoured glove to a small polearm, and a shield of indeterminate size as well, and that is too powerful. If it were scaled back to a point where it could manifest a longsword with ease, and then weapons as small as a short sword or as large as a two handed sword with some concentration, that would be more appropriate.

Two other things. First carven should be carved. Second braclets are narrow bands of leather or metal, or whatnot, and bracers are forearm length armour coverings of leather or metal. Think of the stuff Zena and Hercules wear as bracers.

While the wording (bracer vs. bracelet) can be a little nit-picky, I think this is a good item since it definately has an artistic value to it, rather than meandering over into rune etched, glowing sigils sort of thing. I would imagine that the Frost Thorn would be quite the eye-turner even when it wasnt a frozen weapon.

This, and its companion, the Glaicer mail, are primarily intended as companions to Ms. Celsia Frostblossom, and should probably be interpreted in that context.

Also, on further reflection:

Removed the ability to generate flexible weapons: This includes all weapons with a cord or bending apparatus, so weapons like bows, crossbows & whips are right out. Some cords in some weapons may be replaceable by chain, at DM's discretion, but individual pieces of a weapon are all made out of rigid ice.

I would expect this to share the cold with its wearer the same as the related armor does. No mere mortal can simply use this without consequence.

Mesnoi

       By: Murometz

The food that eats you back.

Creatures of nightmare, the thankfully rare Mesnoi have unique form and attributes. Only one Mesnoi at a time will ever be "encountered".

In appearance, a Mesnoi resembles a walnut-sized chunk of freshly-roasted red meat from some uncertain yet familiar, edible animal. The insidious creature camouflages itself quite appropriately whenever it can, by slowly making its way amidst feast tables and trays of roasted meats.

Once eaten by the unsuspecting, the Mesnoi sinks down to the stomach, reforming if chewed, and begins to lap up the gastric fluids, digestive juices, and bile that it craves, like a sponge.

The Mesnoi carrier will experience mild to severe stomach pains during this time.

After a few hours of this (this is the only time that the Mesnoi can be purged with magic, or other mundane means), the Mesnoi transforms into its true form inside its victim, that of a miniature, once more walnut-sized, pot-bellied, devil-horned, snake-tailed imp. This horrid little creature then begins to chew and eat its way out of the victim from the inside out with its tiny, razor-sharp teeth, like a rat forced to do so via torture.

The victim almost always dies a slow, agonizing death. That much is certain. The devilish imp then exits its victim and begins its seventy two hour existence of mischief and malevolence, until it once more turns back into a hunk of roasted meat with the movement capabilities of a snail.
