The Holy Hovercraft of The Ice Bears

By:

Among the ranks of the white wastes and the endless seas of Plincy roam the hovercraft of the infamous religious mercenaries, Isbjörnarna. The side of each craft is emblazoned with the logo of a striking polar bear: claws extended and fangs bared.

Historical Context

The outpost world of FGI-1179 (known to many as Plincy) had been highly contested for many years, often changing hands several times a season. Aside from its own natural resources, it was also the gateway to the heavily mined Luponos Worlds. Despite this, there was nothing in its climate that appealed to anyone; anyone, that is, except for the Holy Order of Isbjörnarna. Venerating the spirit of the Polar Bear as their god, the order believed the planet to be a holy site and announced their intention to make it their own. They waged war, and won.

The world continues to be very sparsely populated. Few live there outside of the mercenaries and the essentials of their support. Here the order maintains their headquarters, training facilities, barracks, etc, as well as extensive fields (predominantly of potatoes) and hardy sheep that have been genetically modified to survive the harsh conditions of the frozen world. Few mining operations exist, as the order's priests believe the spirit of the Polar Bear would view that as sacrilege. However, they take no issue with profiting off of the traffic that flows between the Core worlds and the Luponos Cluster.

Despite their religious underpinnings, the order freely accepts mercenary contracts based purely on the business aspects of such conflicts. The soldiers who make up its ranks are all devout, disciplined, and very well trained.

The Hovercraft

Isbjörnarna are forever associated with their favorite vehicle, the Holy Hovercraft. Highly mobile, capable of traversing land and sea of many types, they are well-built and sturdy craft.

A few varieties exist, ranging in size, armor and armament, and speed:

  • The heaviest are slow but well protected, with a great deal of firepower; the largest are troop transports
  • The bulk of their number strike a balance between mobility and firepower/armor
  • Scouts are lightly armed and armored but very fast and stealthy

The mercenaries maintain a fleet of starships skilled at performing insertions onto hostile worlds, allowing them to unleash their ranks of Holy Hovercraft upon the foe.

Definitely get a Warhammer 40k vibe off of these guys, somewhere between the Imperium troops and the Space Marines, but closer to the mundane ground pounders. I like their religious angle, and the Holy Hovercraft.

Fun! space-faring polar bear mercenaries. Somehow it makes sense. Who is their leader? Enemies of note?

Good questions. I shall ponder them.

I see that this is the stub you were referring to in the chat the other day. The historical context here is intriguing to me but I am satisfied already by what was already put down. The title was a bit of a mismatch to actual content but then I'm fine with it as it is since it is the historical context section that is the sole interest for me (you know how I'm not a sci-fi person but what you put down under the actual crafts I can handle, any more and my brain would unravel :P) . Besides, I still don't know how changing title name with it being included in the permanent link really works.

Like Muro, I can well see that once you get down into the nitty-gritty of how this sect manages to hold this planet against all the others who want access to the mines and personages of note within the sect, you will have a full sub on your hands that this was just the beginning of. I don't see straight away how this sect is likely to be changed by their military control of this planet and the subsequent conflicts that arise (I always find evolution within a society more interesting than just the history of how it all started but that's personal taste). You might or might not wish to delve into this aspect.

That's certainly an aspect that had never occurred to me to explore, and an interesting road to follow... Dammit, now you have me thinking ;)

There is some great visual appeal to this post, and I think that there is a good idea here, too, but it's bit difficult to parse.

I think that a list of plot hooks or something might fit nicely. There are plenty of places to go with this, but it could stand to be a bit more clearly stated.

A flower possibly in the plains or maybe all over that is always tilted towards a certain place. Sunflowers. Could possibly follow the sun or could be forever facing a certain position because of something that happened, either the air forcing it that way and it staying, the fire was so strong that the flowers faced away from it. It could be that in one spot a large fire was made or a fire war where many fire elementals were destroyed by the True Gods and radiating out from that point all of this flower is facing away from it so no matter where you are you always know where this place is by seeing which way the flower is facing away from.
