Nyelet
Artificial fingernails date back thousands or years, to ladies of ancient Egypt, venerable China, and medieval Europe using different materials to create and decorate fake fingernails.
This tradition exists in the DungeonVerse
Origin
Fake nails have long existed in the DungeonVerse and, given the nature of the Numinous Road, are regularly reintroduced via new travelers and found materials. The official canon origin of Nyelets harkens back to the Orieds, or stone elves, who were pioneers of magical technology, traditions, and techniques. The superficial purpose was cosmetic, allowing the Orieds to make themselves more visually striking. This quickly evolved into the Nyelets becoming components and tools in spellcraft
Author's note: one of the reasons anime characters are so strikingly different in appearance with wild hairstyles and colors is that for most of its history, Japan has been dominated by a fairly uniform phenotype, and this can make rendering aesthetically accurate Japanese characters hard to tell apart in comic form. The Orieds, being of vast lifespan and highly constrained breeding selectivity, were very much the same. They were pale, with white to platinum blonde hair color, and uniform facial and physical features. Thus, they sought ways to make themselves appear different. This was part of a form of self-expression, and also a form of visual communication with the other races. If the Orieds thought they all looked alike, when other races faced them, it was much worse. Non-elfin races couldn't tell individuals apart, or genders apart. So they leaned into increasingly dramatic accessories and stylistic choices. Many of these have been forgotten, with the legacy of the opalescent complected, ghost-haired, terrifying Oried overshadowing their flamboyant and rebellious art and fashion.
