Jacob 'Polaris' Richter

Guiding Star: Profiling Jacob ‘Polaris' Richter
--by Jamie Easton, New York Times

Everyone knows his name. Everyone knows his legend. Congressman Jacob Richter has spent the past two decades trying to distance himself from the name Polaris and much of what the name represents. To many, the name is a sign of respect, and gratitude. To Jacob, it's a reminder of unreasonable expectations and a life he did not choose. But in my latest profile of prominent members of the Delta Community, I learned there is more Polaris in Jacob Richter than he'd like to admit.

“ It seemed like a great place to camp. The clearing was good sized and sheltered from the wind. The brook just a few feet away. There is a natural hallow to keep the horses. Then the night came. It was like it became a different place. The temperature dropped. The wind, which does not seem to disturb cloth, almost cuts through you like an arctic wind. No one can sleep, as the soft ground has turned hard. The horses are uneasy. The Bats are flying over and stopping in the trees. And then there is the eyes. There are glowing eyes just inside the tree line watching your group. The mages and clerics can detect nothing, but there is still something there. (yet there is nothing at all... The Darkness will do nothing unless the players do something to it. And even then it will all seem to be a conincidence.) Of course, in the morning, it all becomes sweet and light.”

“ Real World: some Indians in the Amazon treat their eyes with a traditional potion applied with palm leaves. Brutally painful, the drug alters vision, giving the jungle's dense green walls greater texture and dimension. You could adapt this to desert or swamps, or other hard to navigate regions.”

“ Mining in a certain area turns all exposed skin (maybe just parts that are actively disturbing the chemicals that cause the reaction) of the those doing the mining to a dark blue color. Will wear off taking as many years/days spent in the mine. ... meeting a party of blue-skinned humans armed with pick-axes etc. Strange disease? Demon offspring? Curse? If they meet only one ex-worker, they will very carefully listen to any stories he says, no matter if drunken or insane, or just makes up to get a beer.”
