The Stones of Sinnameron


The finest creations of the gemsmith Sinnameron, the Stones somehow always manage to find their way to the proper people.

The Stones of Sinnameron are all the products of the master gemsmith Sinnameron.  In fact, they are his finest creations.  They are a set of several stones, all cut from the same parent gem.  They all are of similar size, and have a distinctive cut.  It is thought that the Stones were originally part of the same piece.  Currently, the Stones are all in different settings.  Rings, pendants, brooches, earrings, etc.  They have been spread across the known world, and are in the possession of many different owners.  It is very improbable that the owners have any idea of what they possess.  Of course, many collectors would pay a princely sum to possess the complete set.
But that is not the main reason these stones are important.  The Stones of Sinnameron have been known to find their way into the keeping of people destined to become heroes, and bring them together.  A handful of sages know of this property of the Stones, and some make it their business to find the chosen ones.  Others want to use the Stones to identify potential threats.

Magical Properties:

The Stones will sometimes find thier way into the possession of those destined to become heroes.  Either through inheritance, purchase, finding, or outright theft, they will be found with destiny’s favorites.  No one knows when the Stones will point to a group of heroes, although some think that the Stones will make that obvious.  Keepers of the Stones will be drawn to one another.  It is possible that Keepers will not have any knowledge of the Stones or their properties.  They might not even realize that they belong with one another.  It is not known whether or not Sinnameron purposefully enchanted the Stones to behave that way, or if it is an inherent property of the Stones themselves.

I sense a great way to call together a band of random heroes.

I also see an Evil overlord/ Cleric/ wannabe world destroyer searching for those gems, in an attempt to prevent the heroes from banding together to stop them.

If they well known enough to have those that would ignorantly or not so ignorantly want the entire collection, there may be those thats sole purpose is to protect the 'natural' progression of the stones, even if it means ruining this same progression. Maybe along the lines of the Watchers (or whatever) in the Highlander series. They are always there watching the stones but may get involved occasionally but only after great thought and debate.

The Watcher concept is a valid one. Yet another secret organization to be created...

I may be lifting this idea for a fantasy superhero campaign. Those who receive the stones receive a fraction of the Power of The Elders. That gives them powers comperable to a low level super hero (or something from the Masters of the Universe).

Yet this works so well as a tool to get a campaign going...
All the players are stone bearers or people who looking for those who are.

If the bad guys wanting to identify threats are wise to what the stones do and mean, they could capture some and set them in a fortified tower with guards, traps and monsters, a tower far from their base of power. That way, the heros the gems are supposed to find are drawn to the tower to save the gems, and are met with near certain death.

The stones could be inteligent, having memeory of all the heroes that once possesed them. They see greatness in a person and cradle it, transforming them in to a great hero. They actually create the heroes. The stones could be aware of the world around them, finding somebody who could become a hero when a hero is needed.

0xp, for example, the lowliest servant of the Evil guys?

This would make for a fine character background, and not necessarily one you would want to share around. Gives also some private information on 'The Enemy', right from the source. Gives a chance to get a stone easily.

I have to agree with Almar, the stones could have a mind of their own.

It would also be cool if the stones corrupted anyone who they knew (or thought) was not a hero of some kind!

A culture has it forbidden to say their rulers name under penalty of death. Anybody in power must be referred to as their title. Comes from the fact that the rule or position can be taken over by anybody from any level in society. To use the title elevates them or brings them down from whatever level they were originally at before they took the position. Respect and authority comes from the position, not from previous life.
