Keep Silence

By:

Some say that Darigus was murdered for his treasure.  Others say that Darigus’s court magician did away with the nobleman and ran off with his daughter.  And some say that Darigus isn’t dead, and took off with his treasure.  But no one knows for sure…

“Haven’t seen you around before. Must be new round here. Just passin’ through, huh? Well, I s’pose you have to go where you have to go. What? Oh, that big ol’ castle on the hill. People around here calls it Keep Silence now. It had another name once, but I can’t rightly remember what it was. Lord of the district lived up there bout twenty years ago. Darigus was his name, I think. No one’s seen hide nor hair of him for at least twenty years. Treasure? Where’d you get that idea? Oh. He talks too much.”
“Among other things.”
“Oh, you hush up. He ain’t never done you any wrong. Anyway, I’m telling this story. Yeah, I suppose there was a story about Darigus’s treasure. They said he had a king’s ransom stashed on that godforsaken piece of rock. I guess that’s why she came. Now don’t rush me, I’m getting to it. They said twenty years ago, a sorceress came to the castle. No one’s sure what she did, but Darigus and his whole household haven’t been seen since. She musta been really powerful though, cause Darigus had his own magician. Caedre was as good as they come. People said he was mighty fond of Darigus’s pretty daughter.”
“I heard that sorceress bewitched Darigus so’s he fell in love with her, and they killed everyone else and ran away with his treasure.”
“I thought she turned em’ all into stone, and they’re still up there.”
“My daddy said she did away with them all.”
“You’re all crazy. There weren’t no sorceress at all. Caedre got rid o’ Darigus himself. He’s livin’ with his sweetheart in the next kingdom.”
“You’re drunk. As usual.”
“So what if I am? It don’t change the facts.”
“I still say it was a sorceress like everyone says.”
“All I know is that I seen somethin’ up there at night with a light. Kear down at the mill says it’s Darigus’s daughter with a candle, looking for Caedre. Her ghost, anyway.”
“I hear tell it’s the ghost of Darigus himself, looking for his money.”
“Oh, shut up, all of you. Them lights ain’t nothing but glow-bugs playin’ chase, and you all know it. Anyway, no one knows the right of it. If there was a treasure up there, it’s long gone. Now you folk get any silly ideas out of your heads. Keep Silence is dangerous. There ain’t nothing but rats and wild things up there. And if there’s ghosts, they don’t talk none.”

I REALLY like the style of this post - the dialogue. Now, it would be cool to have more solid ideas about what the place is instead of just speculation, but the speculation is mighty cool, and communicates several possible ideas in itself.

I echo Zylithian's comment, I love the way this post comes across as a rumor in a back tavern, and without so much as a single bit of description I can imagine Keep Silence in all of it's crumbling splendor. Nicely done, though I would put some spaces between the various speakers lines to make it easier to read.

I think the 'all rumours' aspects of this sub but it is somewhat hard to read.

Really more of a plot than a location. Interesting nonetheless.

Hu's Iron Ball

       By: Murometz

Hu was an ambassador of the Seventh Emperor of the Reng Dynasty. Throughout his life he traveled across many miles and lands to entreaty with neighboring kingdoms and the semi-savages who dwelled amidst the Metal Mountains.

During one such diplomatic mission, Hu was gifted a small iron marble as a gesture, by a shaman of the Kiy-Kiy tribe. Little else is known of Hu, but that marble was lost and is now somewhere out there for someone to find.

A tiny, shiny sphere, the marble has several properties. First and foremost it is a strong magnet, considerably stronger than its size and density would indicate.

Secondly, if thrown or rolled upon the ground and the command word is spoken, the iron ball will magically enlarge to either the size of an ogres's head or to that of a great globe, twelve feet in diameter. The rolling ball of either size will continue to roll or fly at the same relative speed it was when launched as a marble, and can thus cause great damage to anything in its path. The magnetic power of the ball will also magnify when enlarged.

Legends claim that the ball has been tossed from besieged castles upon attacking foes and rolled at marching armies in ages past. At the end of such rolls, the larger size globe has been known to not only crush soldiers underfoot, but to also "collect" many dozens of metallic weapons and bits of armor unto itself, appearing as an armored sphere, with swords and spears sticking out from it in all directions.

Owning this powerful marble has its drawbacks. Anyone carrying it on their person, will experience the iron ball's insidious effects after some time. The owner feels no worse for wear, but after two month's time they will suddenly awaken one morning to find that their hair has fallen out completely, their teeth loosened like baby's teeth ready to drop, and their fingernails simply shriveled and sliding off the fingers and toes. Perhaps unbeknownst to the owner at first, the iron ball also renders an owner sterile or barren by this time.

Regular clerical healing will not reverse this horrible malady. Only finding and beseeching a shaman of the Kiy-Kiy tribe to heal the iron ball's effects with their particular brand of magic, will work.

Hu's Iron Ball should be handled carefully by players and gms.
