In the closed, or partially closed, system of a vessel in space, what you eat and how it's stored can spell the difference between life and death. Depending on the size of the vessel and how long you're going to be without the chance of resupply various methods of providing the crew with sustenance will need to be hammered out. As the effects of starvation on the human body are well documented, and have been understood well into prehistory, I won't go into detail on them, only reiterate that food is important.

add cryo as foodstuff solution

Nutrition: A subject that even the least space conscious of land lubbers can understand, the need to feed. As the effects of starvation on the human body have been well documented in recent times, and were understood well into pre-history, I won't bore you with the details.

-Hydroponics (bonus, when you start making ~50% of the food needed to feed your inhabitants, you're pulling enough CO2 out of the air that you don't need scrubbers to keep oxygen levels up, only to keep the levels of other hazardous gasses down.

-Carrying supplies is good for short term trips, it gets a bit iffy in the long term due to mass and storage issues.

-E-Rats something found on basically every ship in the system, long term subsistence is generally not recommended due to the fact that most suppliers tend to cut corners and certain vitamins are not at the level you need in the long term, scurvy has been known to happen.

-Supply from grav well

The old hermit living outside the village is rumoured to have a small rusty tin spoon that seems disturbingly ordinary but in reality is a magic spoon. If someone puts the spoon in their mouth will taste food. It can be any type of food, grilled meats, cheese, strawberry, bread and so on. The real bonus is that the food is real and with enough tastings can fill a hungry belly.
