Dog Spiders
A fully domesticated dog spider makes a very good pet and almost never bites, but a wild one is greatly to be feared.
Dog spiders are called that not because they are some mixture of dog and spider but because they are the size of greyhounds and if they are domesticated from the egg stage, and are well treated by their owners, they can be incredibly loyal pets. They enjoy walks, affection, and will eat any meat and other scraps as long as the food is not decomposing. They will let their owners wrestle with them, although if they feel their owner is getting a little over the top they can deliver a dry bite, a non venomous little scratch with their fangs as a warning to knock it off. They have a potent venom that can cause gangrene, and the glands are within their brains and cannot be removed without killing them, but they won’t use their venom on their owners.
Once a year they spin a cocoon type web and crawl inside to moult, and for a few hours after moulting they don’t want to be touched by anyone , not even their owners, and will raise their fangs if anyone comes within arms length , until their new exoskeleton hardens and they walk up to their owner for a cuddle.
Wild dog spiders, because of their venom and sticky webs, are considered as dangerous as bears and treated accordingly, and it’s illegal to feed them as it makes them more of a danger to humans and other sentient beings such as orcs, goblins, and changelings.
