excerpt from Cosumerism in the Petroleum Era
Product Placement and Saturation
While capitalism has become a relic of the petroleum era, consumerism and conspicuous consumption remain aspects of society. Most products, processes and services remain in their respective niches and areas of use. On occasion a good or service will make the leap from niche to the coveted mainstream consumption. This can destroy some companies, or turn them into nascent megacorporations.
Most physical goods and products that become mainstream are subject to the whims of the markets. Their general lifespan is limited and to date few products have lasted a long time before being undone by counter culture movements. But processes and services have a much better lifespan.

McDojos became a global fad following the emergence of parapsychic abilities.
