Khibils
By: RGTraynor

"Alright," the sergeant rasped out, "The Grey Company will pay you seven silver pennies a week, grub included; you’ll have to provide your own kit and mounts.  Muster is tomorrow two hours after dawn—yeah, what is it?"

One of the three fox-men had stepped forward, raising a mailed hand.  His whiskers twitched as he drawled, "You are in error, sergeant.  My kinsmen and I are Khibils.  Of course we shall receive ten pennies a week."

I rolled my eyes, leaning on my shield.  Manannan’s eyeball, this was going to be a long commission.

Full Description

Khibils are fox-men, with red, brown or grey fur and whiskered faces and long, bushy fox-tails.  They are rather supercilious and superior in attitude, deeming themselves better than other races.  Possibly for this reason, they are highly prized as mercenaries and in many positions (such as wizardry, craft guilds or politics) which confer status.  They pride themselves on maintaining their poise under all conditions.  While Khibils have high reputations as warriors, an unusual number of them gravitate to the priesthood.  They have few distinctive cultural practices, other than a strong ethic about cleanliness and proper kit and gear, a common disinclination to mate with other races and a resolve to hold themselves out as the superior beings they feel they are.

Khibils are more dextrous and slightly faster than humans.

Additional Information

There is no Khibil homeland, as such.  They are definitely known not to be from this plane of existence; the first recorded migration of Khibils was in the Mortalendic lands just southeast of Aglarond in the 38th century, presumably through a magical Gate or series of Gates.  They have fully assimilated themselves throughout human society, and can be found in most regions.

I really enjoyed this and the Fristle sub. Classy presentation, fairly original.

Interesting, though a little light as playable races go here.

I have a question about the following:

"Possibly for this reason, they are highly prized as mercenaries and in many positions (such as wizardry, craft guilds or politics) which confer status. "

Why would anyone prize them? It seems more likely they would prize these professions for the reason given.

Interesting, but it seems more of an intro then an in-depth treatment. I would love to see more.

Because it's something of a truism in life that someone who presents himself with supreme self-confidence and arrogance will by that fact alone convince a lot of folks that he's something special. (Heck, isn't the advertising industry based on the premise that you'll think a product's great just because some paid actors tell you it is?)

Bringing it more to the point, what impresses people more? Those who are good fighters, or those who LOOK impressive? Trot out a guy who looks like The Rock, put him in a dapper uniform with lots of shiny medals, and folks would just assume he's a complete badass.

I'm fairly persnickety about language, which I see this site is as well. "Men" has been used as the neuter collective for "men and women" for centuries.

What other dimensions would you like to see? Other than these snippets of tendencies, the three races I posted have, by and large, assimilated into the dominant local cultures, and don't have a raft of unique cultural or psychological practices distinguishable from them. It would be like ascribing a set of detailed, specific practices to "humans."

A powerful wizard that the PCs encounter is completely silent. He does not speak and cannot be heard as he moves. Even his spells are silent, but his magic is just as potent. He has a tendency to summon invisible chairs, place foes in invisible boxes of force, and other "mime tricks".
