It is easy to simply swap the numbers for "a decent bonus", "major bonus" (or penalty). I have considered changing the writeup, but frankly, there is no particular need for that. It shall stand as an example of old craftsmanship. :)

An item like this one would be hard to detect as cursed, as the wielder gets bonuses from it. I like the "sneaky" nature of the shield: Someone trying to detect its magic would be likely to discover that it is powerfully enchanted without understanding the full nature of its curse.
Of course, if the shield's owner DID figure out the curse, he could arrange for one of his enemies to get it, and "hose" the guy's whole group.
The item should have a limited range of effect, perhaps 15' radius, otherwise, the effect could be awfully potent: "The 1,200 men in your legion have a -2 to their saves, but you're not sure why...." Go to Comment
I noticed the stats as well, but didn't see them as a serious issue in this case. The shield's description is comprehensible, even if you aren't familiar with those systems that scale in the +1 (minor bonus) to +5 (major bonus) range.
The subs that I have trouble with are those that don't suggest what they mean before they start slinging out obscure spell references and numbers. (E.g.: "This +5 Sling of Seduction gives targetting bonusses equal to the Randy's Smarmy Slingboy spell, but also gives a +5 bonus to Occupation: Courtesan rolls when worn as swimwear...") No, spells and abilities that easily detect dagic, have a hard to time to find this one. It is a way to tell them: You have something that is magical, but you just don't know what. Simple torches would be the last things suspected. Go to Comment
These torches are a sweet idea. Perhaps there are a good number of torches scatter across the lands being used as prisons for water elementals that were defeated by a fire elemental. Once reunited, they could make a bid for their freedom and try to defeat him. Go to Comment
Perhaps, if the PCs are going to light the torch, and notice they are being held back by something, they may burn the torch, thinking that its evil and out to get them. At this time, it may act like the ring of power (LOTR), and possibly control the person trying to burn it, or one of their companions, to either light the summoned torches, or stop the torch itself from being burnt. Also, when you said that the torch could control fire, (of torches) would that mean if the heros were walking down a corridor with unused torches on the walls, if the torch wanted to, the torches would light up as they walked along the corridor, and maybe light a torch that an enemy was looking at closely (ow! my eye!) , or wearing?? Very nice! Rather inventive and original idea that makes it more-than-less attractive.
Another idea is that the players find one of these that's empty and needs to be filled. So it grabs the first person to pick it up or touch it. When they do it transports them into the torch until something like a remove curse is cast on them. To the rest of the party it looks like Bob just reached down to pick up a torch and then disappeared. That would make a paranoid party very cautious around torches that they find in the next few dungeons. Go to Comment
The heroes have destroyed the minions, plunged through the catacombs and defeated the guardians. They slowly enter the chamber to find the dark mastermind behind the scheme. The mastermind has a request for them, however:
