Although I tend towards more "useful" creatures, I like the idea. I wish you would write more about them. Too often I think people write that nobody knows the history of these things instead of coming up with a creative suggestion (which the readers can always ignore, or use to inspire them to come up with other ideas... I find even suggested ideas I don't like to be much more helpful than no suggestions at all.) Go to Comment

Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-14 12:40 AM
Heh. Well, I agree it is short, but I think it says a lot with few words compared to some posts, which is fine by me. I like how you say you can tell how good a magic school is by looking for the fleas, and that they can bite wizards but not other people. I wonder if you have read The Dragonlance War of Souls books because there is a sort of similar thing (but different) Go to Comment
Fire ants

Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-16 08:55 PM
Wow. Not sure how to rate this one. On a personal taste level, I'm not a fan of overly done thees and thous, which I think this is a little guilty of, but it is very well written on a more objective basis and the puns are amusing. I don't see how this would every come up in game play.. you're basically saying wood burns because of what the ants do in heat. So I suppose then wood without fyre ants wouldn't burn? But the ants seem to be everywhere I imagine. As for sabotaging someone else's home with them, unless I understand the ants themselves do not create fire, unless you hold a torch to the house. I like this post. It's not something to fight, but is something that could really add to a world. A player or NPC could become hooked... players could have to find more spiders... the spiders could get a sickness and the players are asked to find a way to cure them by a rich addict. Recreational drug use is very realistic, and I'm sure in "dark" times like most campaigns the urge of common folk to "escape" would be quite high. Go to Comment

I like the idea, but until you tell me either how it works or what kind of spells crickets like I will not give you even one more sword. Harumph. :-) Go to Comment

Not a bad post, just a little low on calories. It's a big spider.... tell me more. Go to Comment
Ogone flies
Lifeforms  (Fauna)   (Any)
Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-17 12:01 AM
A wise player would keep a few of these in a jar to detect magic items when dividing treasure. They remove the need of a detect magic spell.

Do the flies follow wizards also, or just items? Go to Comment

Pretty cool, mundane item. Based on how you write it up I assume this is a real life history, not a made up one, right? Go to Comment
Cells in The Western Bogs
Locations  (Establishment)   (Swamp)
Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-13 07:09 AM
Who is in charge of administering this justice? Who does sentencing, who guards people while they build their own prison? Can people not dig out? (If my choices were try to dig out of earth or stand still in swamp I know which I would choose. And by nature a swamp should be easy to dig through. And the worst that could happen is you die trying... oh well!) Why is it so cold in winter? Swamps are usually pretty warm, and especially buried in a bioactive pit it should be quite 'comfortable', if wet, in winter unless there is a special weather system. I like the general idea, but wish it were fleshed out more. Go to Comment

It's true bogs can be cold, and with the water it would be especially unpleasant. I wasn't meaning to be difficult - I like the post :-) Go to Comment

Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-13 07:15 AM
I like this idea a lot, but I think it would be much better as Iain said, if the GM provides players with real pages (and I think this is what MH intended). It seems to me that actually making a page would be QUITE difficult to do well... to make it seem like it could be a chess game and also assasination plots. An example of something like that would really put this post over the top. Go to Comment

Knife of Meat-Loving
Items  (Tools)   (Cursed)
Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-12 04:41 PM
Simple, but fun idea. If I were to use this I think I'd give the knife "intelligence" so it would try to get used. It gets lost (like the ring of power in tolkien) and found so it can make the rounds, killing all pets. Or maybe the user kills his/her spouse and is put in jail. The knife is found by someone else. The PCs come in to town and find a mystery where families keep having their pets killed first and then their family members. Why is this happening? A nice little mystery ... the whole adventure could involve never fighting anyone perhaps. Go to Comment

Lol. It's a cute idea. I don't see how it should be so much better for a man than a woman, but that's the authors' prerogative. (I think men can be offensive in the same ways as women if they appear to controlling, but I do understand your point about what society accepts... of course that depends on the society.) I suppose it depends on the subject. Go to Comment

Calvinus could in fact BE his own last work? Maybe as he aged he was going to die, and thought he could preserve himself this way? Very incomplete idea (mine, not yours), but I blame it on your post sir! Go to Comment

I really like this post. It's short, but I love the details (slight smell of onion) and how to delve into its potential uses (despite being cursed!) to ripen fruit and make antiques. Now... how do I get my players to pick up a cutting board? ;-p Go to Comment
Gryphon Knights

Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-12 04:28 PM
I like how this post answered many questions I had been wondering after reading the first two (how many griffon knights are there was one, for example.) I also like how you describe the current 20 at least in brief detail at the bottom. I wonder how the kingdom comes to have griffon allies? I imagine you'll let us know this in future posts. Keep them coming :-) Go to Comment
Sovereign's Finest
Society/ Organizations  (Combative)   (Country/ State)
Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-12 04:23 PM
I like the details you gave about their training and their weapons (in the other post) because without those details it would seem like a generic elite guard. Do the finest wear armor - is it standard issue, or not? I'm surprised they have so much training in stealth and breaking and entering. Often kingdoms may have a separate force for the... more sundry needs. Interesting to have one elite force for both (or maybe there are different wings within the force?) Your posts make me curious to know more about this kingdom.. who are they fighting in wars and why? Go to Comment
A Class Ring
Items  (Jewelry)   (Villanous)
Zylithan's comment on 2005-11-19 01:13 PM
I like the idea of a class ring - while most people weren't schooled then definitely wizards, priests, or maybe even fighting schools could make sense. I also like the draining. The powers seem, as you say, like "a prototype for any number of Evil Cultist and Evil Mastermind objects that assist them in their evil goals". Go to Comment

The PCs are setting up camp at the end of their first day of walking through the Esh-Inel Mountains, when they hear in the distance a low rumbling, like thunder. It grows progressively louder until it echoes off the mountainous bowls around them, then dies away again. At its worst the ground starts trembling. It happens every day at this time, and it is the noise of the Great Carts on the dwarfish underways returning home after a day mining, laden with many tons of ore.
