The intertwining of Time and Music

By:

The story of a castle where time and the sound of piano intertwines

This is a submission meant for the Quick Plots codex which has a 250 word limit. For brevity, some of the underlying concepts behind this submission are not explained within the submission itself but rather included in a separate stub linked to the submission. It may be better to read the stub first before this submission to avoid confusion over the seemingly lack of resolution to the plot.

A haunted castle

Construction of the castle for the Lord has just finished. However, upon moving in, it was discovered that the castle is haunted. In particular, ethereal scenes of battle are seen throughout the castle at nightfall. In the background, a lone piano can be heard. If anyone is bold enough to follow the sound of the piano, he/she will quick discover the...

Source of the haunting

Upon entering the festival hall, a lone pianist outlined in an otherworldly glow is seen at one corner of the room playing a soul-wrenching tune of melancholy. Slowly before the eyes of the 'adventurers' unfolds the tragic story of a pair of star-crossed lovers:

How cursed I am,to be only one step away from a holy union with Srita and now forevermore separated? Where are you, my sweet love?  If only I know that, I will die content.

Behind the scenes

The current castle is built on land where another castle stood barely ten years ago, that fell to a surprise attack during which the pianist died. The pianist is now one of the Bound Ones. His burning desire to know what happened to his beloved resulted in his current state. Being an accomplished pianist in life, playing continuously provides a medium for him to express his sorrow over his fate. Unbeknownst to him, the sound of his piano also draws out the memories of the Restless Horde who were killed during this past battle.

Note: The inspiration for this piece comes from the following lyrics of a Chinese song: “The castle where time and the sound of piano intertwines”

A fairly standard ghost story; as is, it doesn't really speak to me.  Still, you did a lot with your 250-word limit, and I suppose that I can't really expect loads of detail with those kinds of strictures.  Perhaps if you ran it with the right accompanying soundtrack, this piece would really have the chance to shine.

The Candle-Eyed Man

       By: Murometz

The third son of a candle-maker, and secretly a spy, Tsiao Fong Wei betrayed his family, clan, and town to the merciless Qongg Dynasty, causing the deaths of his own family members. He survived to an old age hiding out in the country side and keeping a low profile. One day however, the “Paper Knife” finally found Tsiao Fong Wei , and exacted his revenge on behalf of the folk, dead and tortured.

After a furious struggle, the “Paper Knife” plunged twin burning candles into the eyes of the traitorous old man and laughed, as Tsiao Fong Wei howled in dismay and pain. Some say Tsiao Fong Wei died that day. Others say that the old man somehow escaped despite his sudden anguish and utter blindness.

The truth is lost to time.

But to this day the children of the Red-Ridge County towns and villages are told by their parents to always beware twin lights in the darkness and to never venture into the woods at night, and to keep an ear open for the Groaning Ghost, for somewhere out there Tsiao Fong Wei the Traitor, now a vengeful spirit, stumbles about the darkness moaning and wailing, candles still sticking forth from out of his otherwise empty eye sockets. And though the candles plunged into his eyes all those years ago were a’flame going in, now the wax protuberances are somehow lit from within and burn without, and two flickering lights in the darkness, always portend his coming.
