The Subtle Knife

By:

A powerful knife with the ability to cut through any material, no matter how thick or how hard it is. This knife also has the ability to open up windows to other dimensions.

This knife appears to be an ordinary knife to others. It has a dull grey look and has no magical properties.

If the Knife Bearer wields this knife, the knife physical properties will change. It would become a shiny knife, half of it gold colour and the other half silver.

Magical Properties:

The silver end of the knife has the ability to slice through anything with ease. Nothing can resist the power of this knife.

The gold end of the knife has the ability to slice between dimensions. If you focus your mind at the tip of the knife, you will feel a tug that will allow to draw the cut in the air. Connecting the ends of the cut will produce a window in the gap. This gap allows anything to pass through with no problems.

The window between dimensions will remain there. The Knife Bearer can close them by pinching the edge of the window. Doing so will make the window vanish.

Choosing which dimension to open depends on the cut. When cutting, each dimension has a different resistance. For example, the cut can feel like elastic or brittle. The same dimension can be open many times by finding its specific resistance.

Only the Knife Bearer has the ability to wield this knife. The mark of the Knife Bearer is a missing half of the thumb and index finger of their least dominant hand. The fingers can be healed together by any means.

The first one to wield this knife will become the Knife Bearer. The penalty is the lost of the thumb and finger. The power of the knife can be transfer to a different person, but it again requires the penalty.

Ok, I like the dull and lifeless form of the non-wielded knife. I like that quite a bit, actually. As though the knife has the latent ability, but requires the lifeforce of a certain human to activate it. It would also be good for smuggling it by those who could detect magic. I may even use that thought, someday.

Apart from that, I don't really like it at all.

Edged weapons which can cut through anything are overdone and overpowerful.
Daggers to cut through dimensions are also done a bit, though not quite as often.

Where did the dagger come from? Why is it magical? How does the knife-bearer lose his finger and thumb when he becomes it?

Anywho. I'd give this a 2.5, but I don't think its quite worth a 3, so I voted a 2/5.

This is plagiarized from a book, entitled, predictably, The Subtle Knife.

Oh? Well that sucks then. I hope the BOOK, at least, was good.

The book is great... it's the second in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.

I don't mind "duplicate items" as long as they give credit to the original material.

This is an okay 2.5 kind of post.

If the author had given credit to Pullman for taking the idea from his (amazing) book, it would have been fine. However, no credit was given and the item is practically a carbon copy of the book's knife, right down to the missing thumb. And the book's description is even better. I don't especially like to beat down a dead goose, but this one particulary irked me.

The king's palace is destroyed by a falling star, which detonates like a nuclear bomb in the center of the city. When the inhabitants grow brave enough to investigate the ruins of the palace, they find a new ruler, one from beyond the stars, emerging from the meteor.
