The Oaken Duke

By:

The kingdom of Shyvora is known for its inclusion of non-humans.  One of their best fighting Dukes is a tree…

Appearance Appearing as a 7’ tall humanoid Oak Tree, the duke has a thick trunk and powerful limbs and ‘legs’.  His crown is heavily leaved and his trunk is girded by thick bronze plates.  Where his bark is visible, many scars mark the surface.

Special Equipment The Duke bears custom-made bronze armor made from him by his grateful human liege.  It is naturally corrosion resistent and very thick. For weapons, he generally uses two large axes, or a shield and axe.

History

Known among the Dwarven Treeherds by the name of Broadtrunk, this exceptional individual showed great aptitude toward military tactics and led his 1st Warden Regiment to several key victories against Shyvora’s enemies.  Taking advantage of their ability to blend into the forest and use the trees themselves as scouts, they were able to route units much larger then their own.

Roleplaying Notes

The Duke is quite intelligent - being moreso then most humans, and has a force of personality strong enough to inspire even human troops. If anything, the Duke’s confidence is also his greatest weakness.  He is smart, but tends to dismiss the intelligence of his opponents, a flaw which might lead to this peerless warrior finally failing.

THE GNOMES OF UDNALOR: Part II

Having left the hush of the upper halls, and crossed the depths of the Braeth (an underground river, which is not all that deep because bear in mind we're talking about gnomes here), you would find yourself in Wattling Street, the main road through Udnalor. It's actually a long, well-worn passageway which opens out eventually into the City Centre. The gnome-buildings branch off Wattling Street as small burrows or caverns with boulder-blocked doorways for privacy. You can find armourers and smiths (though their armour tends to be on the small side for humans to buy) and many other types of trader.

There are many streets, ginnels and cooies which run off Wattling Street, the most famous probably being Smell Street, the domain of the infamous gnomish alchemists, the eponymous smell being very distinctive: the stench of cooking fungus, the aroma of subterranean spices, the pungent reek of rotting carcasses (used in some of the more notorious experiments). An encounter with an alchemist can really be spiced up (excuse the pun) if you have a well-stocked herb cupboard, and actually make up the potions, elixirs and draughts as they are ordered by characters.
