The Book of Quests


A not-so-subtle means to send PCs on adventures.

Having being inundated by childrens' books - I have three very busy little ones - one series that struck me was the Magic Treehouse (need to confirm title).

There, there were hundreds of books, and the protagonists would find one was either mysteriously open, or a bookmark had appeared.

By opening the book,looking withing and making any type of statment that could taken as a desire to travel, the treehouse would travel to that destination.

So, this, plus such TV shows as Quantum Leap

Simply put, the book contains many quests - typically wrongs that need righted, appropriate to the party at hand. These quests should be serious - one should not casually peruse this volume.

Campaign Use:

Apart from the obvious, a means to 'logically' bring the PCs to whatever plot suits your fancy, the book could serve other purposes.

Someone else has been drawn into a quest and the PCs have been somehow involved to find them. After some searching of varying degrees of difficulty, they find the book open to a particular page. They then need to enter the quest, one which is more suited to the missing party then their own...

When The Wind Blows

One day a a wind begins to blow out of the West. The next day it gets stronger. And stronger still the next few days. Eventually (and fortunately), the speed of the wind tops out at a steady fifty miles an hour, but continues to blow. Soon an entire kingdom is wondering why it's not abating. The weather mages deem it unnatural but can't seem to banish or control it. The priests of various faiths claim it's divine. The End-Of-Days crowd is having a field day with their predictions of doom. No one knows why the gale persists. When inquiring with neighboring kingdoms, it seems they too suffer from a persistent western mistral. Eventually the populace begins to adapt to living with a twenty four hour a day wind. Always from the West, and perpetual. What could be causing this? A raging Elemental king? a curse from the gods? an unearthed artifact? Or has Nature itself gone haywire?
