Sabrille the Leech Fetcher
By: Stephie

She sat down and chatted with the young man until the leeches began to just fall off her legs - satiated with blood.  The young man, enthralled and disgusted by what he just saw, thanked her and went on his way.

Appearance/Personality

Sabrille Eteaux is a slightly overweight, burly woman in her early 40’s.  A brightly colored scarf usually holds her curly blond hair back revealing her pretty face.  She dresses comfortably in loose clothing that consists of a short-sleeved blouse and a thin skirt that usually hides her heavily scarred legs.  Sabrille usually carries a wicker basket and a thick workmans belt with sundry items.

Sabrille is a simple woman of low intelligence.  She seems to have a very childlike perspective on life.

History/Background

Sabrille Eteaux is the eldest daughter of her shopkeeper parents, Ania and Bronne.  One of her favorite pastimes growing up was to swim in Willow Lagoon until one day when she came out of the lagoon with leeches covering her body.  She ran home sobbing and her parents painstakingly removed each leech with fire or salt.  After this horrific incident, Sabrille’s parents forbade her from swimming in the lagoon.

A year later, Sabrille and Bronne went mushroom picking and they ventured upon the lagoon.  Sabrille longed to wade into the water and her father, not wanting to deny his child happiness, told her to only wade in the shallows.  Sabrille did as her father said as he continued picking mushrooms under large trees.  Suddenly the Sabrille’s screams broke the serenity of the environment and Bronne ran to the lagoon to find his daughter being partially dragged underwater by thick reeds and mud under the water’s surface.  Bronne swam into the water and grabbed Sabrille, again covered with leeches, and pushed her to safety before he was dragged into the water.  Sabrille, confused and in pain, was unable to do anything.  She ran home as she did a year prior but this time screamed about her father’s demise.  Ania ran back to the lagoon but found no signs of her husband.

In the years that passed, Ania began to despise Sabrille.  Ania was still left with a failing business and five children to feed and care for.  Unbeknownst to Ania, Sabrille had already started revisiting the lagoon.  She would always get as far as wading in as far as her knees and come out with leeches attached to her calves.  Fear of being caught by her mother, she would rip each leech off her legs and cover her scabbed legs with her long skirts.

When Sabrille was older, she encountered a young man in the lagoon standing in the shallows with a small jar.  When she asked what he was doing, he indicated that he was a leech fetcher.  He sold the leeches to the local physician.  The young man was only brave enough to grab a few leeches at a time and barely made anything with what he caught.  Sabrille waded into the waters, stomped through a few reeds, and came out with legs covered in leeches.  She sat down and chatted with the young man until the leeches began to just fall off her legs - satiated with blood.  The young man, enthralled and disgusted by what he just saw, thanked her and went on his way.

Sabrille seemed to have issues being a shopkeeper and also in finding a husband.  Eventually, Sabrille’s leg scars discovered, and Ania’s rage and blame came out a hundred fold.  Ania blamed Sabrille for Bronne’s death and her horrible life.  Sabrille was forced to leave home and find her own way.  The poor woman went back to Willow Lagoon where she had her only place of solitude.  She decided to try her hand at being a leech fetcher…

Today Sabrille can be found traveling different areas searching for prime leech fetching areas.  She has a large clientele ranging from physicians to gourmet chefs.  She will fetch and sell leeches to any willing to pay.

Special Equipment

A large wicker basket with straps allowing it to be worn on the back.  The basket is filled with different sized jars and vials containing different sized and species of leeches.

Plot Hooks

*The players may encounter Sabrille to purchase leeches for whatever reason they might need them.

*The players could be tasked with locating a special leech and could enlist the help of Sabrille to find it.

A lovely leech lady. (Whee, alliteration!) Anyway, as Cheka said, a friendly NPC, although quite, erm, disgusting, in concept.

Hate and vengeance are powerful forces. They dull the inhibitions, cloud the thoughts, and drive people to commit unspeakable acts. There are demons that reflect intense human emotion, taking shapes that best reflect the desire and experiences of their victims.
