Rose Tree
By: manfred

Quote from an idea of Strolen: “A series of trees drop super spiny seeds to the ground. Only the most durable shoes can keep the spines from stabbing through.”

Full Description
The tree produces wonderful deeply red flowers, faintly resembling actual roses, with what resembles soft white hair around. While not thorny, the flowers then close into hard seeds, the soft hair turns into sharp thorns, making the ground around dangerous. Presumably, it is an adaptation to local reptiles and their hard skin, helping it to stick and be carried to new locations.

To humans, it is a painful thing to pass under the tree in late summer. Most local animals know when to evade it, too. Luckily, a seed stays hard for only a few weeks, a few days at most if it gets wet.

In autumn, the leaves turn to exactly the same red colour, making it stand out among other trees.

Additional Information
Local men like to describe the Rose Tree as a woman, beautiful and tender, but able to wound deeply as well. Some choose this flower when declaring love. Several poems and songs exist, likening pretty girls to the tree, but also warning of their vanity.

I like the tree. It has good. It has bad. It has a cultural impact.

Now, in this particular case I need to ask what you want to know more about.

Although this one is really short, it seems to have all the necessities, and is easy to expand in any direction desired. For sure I could write down a poem or song featuring the Rose Tree... but really, that is not my strong side. :)

So, let me know what is missing.

You're right - I really can't say what needs added, so I'll strike that from the record :)

In a crowded marketplace, a man is standing on a soapbox, orating. Some of the crowd are cheering, some hissing, some standing around saying "I can't hear a bl**dy word he's saying". It's a hustings for an election. The PCs can either leave, or stay and listen. If they do the latter, then they can vote too, and they might get quite involved in the cheering. Depending on who wins they might get quite involved in the post-election brawl too... There are numerous possibilities with this encounter: the PCs might end up talking to one of the nervous candidates before their speech, and offer encouragement and support. Of course this candidate may well turn out to be someone with outspokenly unorthodox views, and the crowd don't take kindly to s/his supporters. Or maybe the seemingly innocuous candidate turns out to be a complete racist, and the PCs wander off embarrassedly, pretending they weren't talking to this person five minutes ago.
