Dunkleoustous
By: Maggot

Large and powerful, they are the aquatic equivalent of elephants in a battle situation-very dangerous, but no army can afford not to have large numbers of them.

Full Description
The Dunkleoustous is a 30 foot long armoured fish with bony ridges in it’s huge jaws that serve as teeth, and a two foot long mouth. The first three feet of it’s body are covered in natural armour plating that is almost impossible to penetrate with a weapon. These highly fierce fish are very good at breaking down the morale of an opposing army and are used as the spearhead of a charge. An Eshal sits on a saddle mounted on the head.

Having said this, they are very labour intensive to feed and have to be trained from when they are very small. And there is a danger that they could end up panicking and fleeing through their own lines, in which case they have to be killed with a blade thrust by their driver through an eye to reach the brain.

I have a detail fetish and this leaves me hanging. How are they trained? What do they eat? What is lifespan, etc... I don't need these answers in particular, but just a little more than this if you want a 5. But it's a nice to the point post.

The PCs are setting up camp at the end of their first day of walking through the Esh-Inel Mountains, when they hear in the distance a low rumbling, like thunder. It grows progressively louder until it echoes off the mountainous bowls around them, then dies away again. At its worst the ground starts trembling. It happens every day at this time, and it is the noise of the Great Carts on the dwarfish underways returning home after a day mining, laden with many tons of ore.
