Darbeast

By:

Darbeasts are fearsome jungle beasts. They thunder through the jungle defending their territory from any perceived threats. They swim through the rivers and lakes, their massive bulks buoyant, eating grasses and spearing fish. Their strident calls are known to cause other beasts in the jungle to run.

Darbeasts are fearsome jungle beasts. They are some of the most aggressive herbivores known to humankind. These massive beasts are armed with long ivory tusks and short horns on the forehead and along the spine (technically they are spines, but they are exactly identical to the short, round horns upon their heads.) backed up by their huge mass. That which is not stabbed, are trampled under those broad feet. They are highly territorial, each family unit (one male, one to three females, and all kids under the age of seven, will attack any other Darbeasts or any creature they feel threatened by in their territory. Protected by their thick greyish skin, they actually fear very little. Given they can live for up to 40 years in the wild, their cunning and pack coordination instills fear in many other animals.

An approximately 20-year-old Darbeast weighs 3500 - 4500 kg on average, and measures around 2.6 metres at the back. It has large floppy ears, a short snuffly nose, a very thick skull, a broad round body, moderately long legs, and a tiny snub tail. While they will thunder through the jungle at speed up to 35 kph, they are quite able to swim in rivers and lakes. In fact, they are quite adroit underwater.

Their call, called a shriek, is quite loud and can carry for up to six KMs in the jungle. Many animals are instinctively on edge the moment they hear one.

Additional Information
Darbeasts are the "totem animal" of the WarLord in the city of Thierry

Scary Jungle critters. Psychotic Elephants. Maybe it is something in the local water. Maybe they become peaceful if they are taken out of the environment?

Why are they so violent if they are herbivores? Are they worried someone else will eat all of their plants?

Actually they are just extremely territorial. This is not that uncommon. Rams and Hippo bulls are herbavores that are just this territorial. They both attack anything they see as a threat to their group or their territory. (In fact, more people are lost to hippo attacks along African rivers than to crocs.)

Dinosaur herbavores were probably this way as well. Just look at the offensive weapondry on some of them.

So in all, these are not really a stretch.

I was just reading City Image - Thierry and remembered that I wrote this post. They do dovetail nicely.

It would also work well if these things terrorized the adventurers previously, long before they go to Thierry. That way, the PCs might be suitably impressed by the city and its society.

What if a invisible person could see other invisible creatures? All you would need to do to check for nasties hiding around is turn invisible.
