Chinese Mythical Life forms

By:

A collection of Chinese Mythical Lifeforms compiled from online sources

This codex contains a collection of Chinese Mythical Life Forms (Fauna, Flora plus Intelligent Races) compiled by Moonlake from a Wiki page written in Chinese. All entries are translations by Moonlake rather than creative content. As far as the author can tell, the Wiki pages themselves are compiled from a variety of ancient texts detailing folklore, strange life forms, myths etc. This collection is meant as a source of inspiration as well as quick drop-ins into a game if it suits. There will be eventually be around 150+ entries in total.

Life Forms are grouped by the following themes, with each theme being a submission on its own:

-Life forms representing good omens

-Life forms representing bad omens

-Life forms providing varying degrees of danger to adventurers

-Relatively harmless life forms

It is mine too although most others seem to prefer the dangerous ones.

I think there is more to say in the introduction of this codex than what you put here. A little discourse on the nature of the mythology would be welcome.

I agree now that I look back on it. However, I would be hard put to actual write such a discourse as you suggest. Maybe some other time in the future.

The seafaring people of the Southern Islands value their ships greatly, as do other maritime nations. However, they take the beliefs about ships a bit further. A ship's name is very important, once it is named it shouldn't be renamed anymore, ever; most renamed ships seem to fail sooner or later. Ships do not tolerate parts from other ships, a single board from a wrong source can cost sailors their lives, so it is said.

Most ships are identified as female, very few as male, though there is no tale of how their personality is identified; it has nothing to do with the name, for example. The Clarissa (a well-known male ship) is said to like good wine. So whenever sailors or passangers drink, they have to spill a glass for the ship, too. But that is only the most known example.
