Thenadore the Young


Thenadore is a small boy who always laugh and who is considered a child prodigy. However there is a secret concerning him. A secret few knows about.

Human boy age 7, his hair is blonde and his eyes are brown. He always laughs and likes to play pranks (kind ones) on people he love. He doesn’t care too much about his outwards appearance, much to his mother’s distress. He can usually be found discussing politics with his elderly grandfather (and others), or playing hide and seek with his friends.

Thenadore is the fourth son of the town/village miller. Everyone talks about his mother in a reverent tone; apparently she was the town beauty in former days and her beauty is still recognizable, in spite of greying hair and wrinkles. She dotes on Thenadore, but is worried about him.

Thenadore was born on the night the great archmage Niluran died. The midwife found the dead old man in a ditch by the fields near the house, just as she left after the delivery. Unbeknownst to anyone, the mage watched the birth through the windows of the miller’s home, and when Thenadore arrived his soul probed the young newborn for a shelter and a host in the years to come. Curious, the innocent soul of Thenadore accepted, and in the last seven years they have co-existed in a symbiotic and benevolent partnership.

The only two who have an inkling about this is Thenadore’s teacher, Marcus the learned, and the boy’s mother. Thenadore loves to quote the archmage Niluran when alone with Marcus, who was a former (failed) student of the mage. “Marcus, young whippersnapper, forget your daydreams for a moment and concentrate on the matter at hand” Thenadore will taunt, much to the teacher’s distress. As for his mother, she has spotted the young boy at play in his nursery, apparently addressing the empty air in conversation with himself. First he will ask a question just as an innocent and gullible seven year old would have This will be followed by an answer in the worldly wise and weary perspective of a kind old man. His mother is frightened but is unsure about what she should do. She is afraid what the Hexenjaegers (witch hunters) will do if they suspect something is amiss with lovely little Thenadore. Their asylums and exorcism by fire and hot iron are things she dread. Thus she can often be found running about town shouting “Thenadore, Thenadore!” with a shaky, clearly nervous, voice. Thenadore will usually come running and then hug her adoringly.

Thenadore is a small boy who always laugh and who is considered a child prodigy. He will help elderly ladies, tell polite and remarkably intelligent jokes and sometimes talk in academic terms with adults. But when the other children comes he runs away with them, shouting and giggling, with the profound joy only a child can show!

Play him as an active young boy, running around giggling and shouting. Then later he can be seen in a temperamental debate with the town elders. His voice is thin and he always smiles. He has been known to disappear for short periods of time, and at these moments he can be met in the forest gathering herbs or in the library studying old, dusty tomes.

Note: Soul shifting is extremely rare in my setting so most people won’t understand the connection between Niluran and Thenadore

Okay. If you edit the `', it is worth a 5. It is an interesting concept, a new take on the re-incarnating ubermage. There is potential for this character, dramatic potential when he gets a bit older.

I think the thing that makes this special in relation to other characters afflicted with soul shifting / body stealing /cohabitating with another soul is that Thenadore is not at war with himself and both souls get along. I think this makes him valuable as a repository of Nilurian's wisdom with the innocense of a child. Nice work.

Far be it for me to vote differently than everyone else. It is truely a remarkable submission. Well defined and laid out. Purely thought went well into this NPC.

My bigeest issue, which is why I took .5 away is why would Niluran transfer his soul to begin with? It smacks of an easy way to create a plot. I would prefer a reason myself on why it happened. Was he dying? Was someone after him? By reading his 'failed' student it didn;t seem like he was liked to much.

Do not get me wrong, I like the concept and enjoy it very well. It would be a ncie touch to have a 7 year old playing with toys and throwing dirt at a girl only to have him come in and speak of goverment issues in front of the party.

Well, certainly you will get your answers. Niluran transferred his soul because he was dying. Not every mage has access to "lichy-potions" (or wants to use them), or the fountain of youth.

Niluran was a kind old mage who did not want to forcibly suppress the soul of his new host. He chose a young host because it would live longer. He was indeed unpopular with the failed student. This was not because he was evil or anything, but because he required his young student to actually study. When he did not study hard enough, the failed student was asked to choose a career more fitting for him.

Not grand, nor evil, but perfectly logical. The only quirk of Niluran's was his dry humour and sharp tongue, which the "Young whippersnapper" comment reflects.

So an imaginary friend who could be far more than imaginary.

Once the child becomes older, he obviously has a direct channel to tutor him on magic, should he go that route. Or perhaps a great general who brings his own consul wherever he goes.

The Hexenjagers are a great threat and provide the needed conflict here.

It would also be interesting if something attempted to possess the boy as well, and found, to their chagrin, the boy already occupied - and formidably to boot.

Strolen has rewritten and reformatted the site numerous times. During all those rewrites, my subs have hurt, because new changes have broken the way it used to be.

I assure you, my subs used to be perfectly formatted, back in the day :)

Hu's Iron Ball

Hu was an ambassador of the Seventh Emperor of the Reng Dynasty. Throughout his life he traveled across many miles and lands to entreaty with neighboring kingdoms and the semi-savages who dwelled amidst the Metal Mountains.

During one such diplomatic mission, Hu was gifted a small iron marble as a gesture, by a shaman of the Kiy-Kiy tribe. Little else is known of Hu, but that marble was lost and is now somewhere out there for someone to find.

A tiny, shiny sphere, the marble has several properties. First and foremost it is a strong magnet, considerably stronger than its size and density would indicate.

Secondly, if thrown or rolled upon the ground and the command word is spoken, the iron ball will magically enlarge to either the size of an ogres's head or to that of a great globe, twelve feet in diameter. The rolling ball of either size will continue to roll or fly at the same relative speed it was when launched as a marble, and can thus cause great damage to anything in its path. The magnetic power of the ball will also magnify when enlarged.

Legends claim that the ball has been tossed from besieged castles upon attacking foes and rolled at marching armies in ages past. At the end of such rolls, the larger size globe has been known to not only crush soldiers underfoot, but to also "collect" many dozens of metallic weapons and bits of armor unto itself, appearing as an armored sphere, with swords and spears sticking out from it in all directions.

Owning this powerful marble has its drawbacks. Anyone carrying it on their person, will experience the iron ball's insidious effects after some time. The owner feels no worse for wear, but after two month's time they will suddenly awaken one morning to find that their hair has fallen out completely, their teeth loosened like baby's teeth ready to drop, and their fingernails simply shriveled and sliding off the fingers and toes. Perhaps unbeknownst to the owner at first, the iron ball also renders an owner sterile or barren by this time.

Regular clerical healing will not reverse this horrible malady. Only finding and beseeching a shaman of the Kiy-Kiy tribe to heal the iron ball's effects with their particular brand of magic, will work.

Hu's Iron Ball should be handled carefully by players and gms.
