City Image - Barrowtown

Barrowtown grew up in the area that was a Royal Necropolis. At first it was a ramshacle place built with anything that came to hand, apart from the stones and earth of the royal barrows. Those that tried were slain by the wights within them. It was noticed that the wights would slay any criminals in their area, not just those that disturbed their barrows, and so traders and merchants came there and slowly the city improved. The houses were built of wood from the nearby forest. Pico-wood for the richest citizens, and oak for the middle class. The poor who cannot find a menial job as servants are moved on by the Barrowtown Constabulary.

By day the city is as busy as any other, by night nearly all people stay indoors. Mori rock is used to light houses as torches are considered a fire risk.

In the centre of the city is the Barrowtown Market, famous throughout the continent for it’s size and splendour.Anything legal and certain illegal things can be brought here for the right price. Some of the magical books are of black magic, amongst some of the spices are forbidden drugs, and assassins mingle with the crowds looking for someone to hire them, although they rarely kill anyone within the city or the Barrow-Downs, because if the city guards do not kill them, the wights almost certenly will when they try and leave the city. The wights know a lot of what goes on.

Everyone more or less knows what they can and can’t do in the area.Traveling along the roads is fine, going near the barrows is not.Once Queen Yocasta sent an army to try and take the city but they looted a barrow on the way and the wights came out en masse and slaughtered nearly the whole army.

Now this is an innovative idea, undead working in a sort of symbiotic relationship. The wights get their fill of whatever they gain from killing criminals, and the locals are protected from said criminals. This could be a five-sword submission if it had more detail, like more detail on the wights themselves, are they simple shadows, or the ghostly imprint of the kings of antiquity? What defines a criminal to a wight? Would a petty thief or someone who fudged on their taxes be hunted and killed the same as a bloody-handed murderer?

Very cool. It is a creepy evil setting that makes sense.

Unique, and depending on what kind of death systems one has in a world, it would be great to stick into the outskirts of a dying kingdom, or as an independant state of its own. And yes, it would make for some very cool, creepy horror quests indeed.

This is a neat one. Like a somewhat more tame version of the Army of the Dead from Lord of the Rings.

That said, it illustrates more the atmosphere than a physical description of the city.

the dead mechent of death

       By: celticring

To Dougles Nye money is power, a powerful wizard only newly into lich-hood

Originally the son of servants to a noble family, yet he found that life humiliating. "How could anyone stand to serve another?" he often wondered. His father, was a greedy man who offered an explanation one day “It’s all for the coin, every demanding, humiliating thing. It’s for the coin, boy."

So when Dougles began developing the potential for magic, he found a way out of a life of servitude. Learning magic though stolen books, he made his escape. Taking the all the possessions of the lord’s vaults with him. He set out to gain as much money as possible.

His gifts for magic allowed him many advantages other merchants could only dream of. Capitalized on the use of deviation magic, allowing him to always having what the city he is in needs most, whether that is wheat or weapons, poison or drug doesn’t matter to him.

Some would say he follows war, disease, famine, and political strife like a vulture looking for a nice carcass to claim. What they don’t know is he has a hand in the conflict he supposedly follows. Assassinating ruler to incite wars, casting spells that decimating crops, acting as an information broker to both sides in a conflict. Dougles is known as a man who can get what you need to some, to other a monster who capitalizes on the suffering of others.

The lich know as Dougles Nye, prefers the title ”The Merchant of Death” for that shows just how much power money has earned him.
