Book of Fury and the sword Vengeance
Appearance:
He’s a very tall, thin man, with short, somewhat spiked blond hair and round spectacles. He dresses nearly entirely in black clothes, with a high clerical-type collar, that generally look unkempt. A large sword is strapped to his back. He speaks but rarely, and his voice is broken and barely above a whisper.
Background:
Lord Tianus was happy with his life. He had a beautiful wife and two good sons. He had good lands and a lovely manor. He had a reasonable amount of power and content peasants. He had everything. And then, quite suddenly, he had nothing at all.
He had been in the capital, attending to some matter or another. While he was away, the unthinkable happened. A vampire lord and his undead minions swept down upon Tianus’s lands and manor. They ravaged the countryside, they killed the people. The vampire took Tianus’s wife and his two sons for his own. When Lord Tianus returned from the capital, he found a scene of devastation. The villages were mostly empty or burned. The graveyards had tripled in size before there was no one left to bury the dead. Tianus saw this, and fled home. But, alas, he was too late; the great manor house was empty of the living. He could not find his wife or children; all he found were the bodies of the slain servants. Some of whom, it seems, got up to walk the halls as Tianus sat alone with his grief. He surely would have been killed, but for the fact that a nobleman is trained in combat to the point of perfection. As Tianus stood over the body of a man who had once been his most faithful servant, something broke within him. He took his sword and some essentials, and left the silent manor forever.
Two years later, a tall, thin scarecrow of a man purposefully approached the town of ______________. This town had long been ruled by the iron fist of Duke Eleskil. It took but a few pointed questions to ascertain the history of this place. The Duke had ruled this place since anyone could remember, and periodically left his realm for purposes no one knew. No one had seen his face by daylight, and those who braved the frightening trek to his castle on the steep hill seldom returned. A wasting sickness had long plagued the region, and only the poorest remained. And two years ago, the Duke had returned from one of his jaunts with his new Duchess, a coldly beautiful woman, and two young lieutenants.
The stranger found his way to the castle, and was seen going inside. For the next three days, faint echoes of horrendous noises could be heard emmanating from the castle. After the three days, there was a short period of silence. Then a fire started, and gutted the castle.
The stranger was caught coming down from the hill. He would answer no questions, and inspired a very real fear. The only response he ever gave them was when they asked him his name. “Reverend Fury,” he said in a hoarse, broken whisper. And then he was gone.
The Reverend stood on a cliffside, watching the sun rise. He felt the healing cuts in his face left by his dead wife’s fingernails, and the scrapes left by his eldest son’s teeth. They were dead, as they should have been two years ago, as was the monster that had killed them, and the abominations that served them. But surely that wasn’t the end of the story. As dawn broke, the man who had once been Lord Tianus had his epiphany. There were surely other abominations that walked the earth. He was obviously the man destined to clean the world of their taint.
And so it was that the Reverend Fury took up his quest. He wanders the land, searching out the foul things that should lie in the cold earth. Some call him a murderer. He does not care.
Roleplaying Notes:
Reverend Fury is obsessed with hunting down and destroying undead, particularly vampires. He does not feel the need to be absolutely sure about a target. If he even suspects that someone is a vampire (or some other undead) or is working for or with one, he will kill that person. In his warped mind, if the person was an innocent, then at least they are safe for all time from the predations of his foes.
Conversely, his quest is all that matters to him. He pays no attention to anything else, unless it’s in his way. He may walk right by a murder if he is sure that the undead aren’t involved. He is also unconcerned with any power vacuums or other difficulties his quest may cause. The fact that he may be causing more harm than good does not register with him.
Reverend Fury is incredibly strong (as only the mad can be) and is very, very good at using his sword. If he gets into a fight, he’s likely to start quoting snippets of his Book of Fury. He honestly believes he is destined to slay all undead, and that he will be invincible until he does. While he will not hinder any who claim to be in his line of work, he will give them no assistance, on the assumption that they have no idea what they’re doing.

The Book of Fury is a tool that many aspiring vampire hunters would kill to get their hands on. Of course, since the only way to get it would be to pry it from the dead hand of the Reverend Fury…
