Envelope Character Generation
« on: September 27, 2018, 03:31:07 PM »
Harking back to the heady days of the first StrolenCon in New York, I routinely find myself looping back to Moonhunter's brilliant envelope based game. I am looking at setting up an in person CE game, and two of the potential players are super casual entry level gamers.

Stage One: Character Build Envelopes

I write out 5-8 basic character builds, nothing fancy, just a basic stats, skill sets, and basic gear. We don't want to waste valuable game time teaching everyone how to bang out a character.

Stage Two: Interesting Envelopes

Everyone gets an Interesting Envelope, these contain a notecard with a relatively basic character twist. They are random so I wont know who got which, and will be things like 'You are a robot, but no one knows, yet'  just something to keep it interesting.

Stage Three: Bonuses and Flaws

Flaw envelopes contain negative things, like drug dependence, PTSD, prosthetics, etc. These are worth points, these points can be used to buy more skills and points on the character sheet, or pick up a Bonus envelope. Bonus envelopes contain things that are awesome for the character, like being rich, or being a genetically enhanced individual. There are no good things in Flaw cards, and no bad things in bonus cards.

Big Twists!

You are a robot impersonator

You are a clone impersonator

You are an assassin

You are a saboteur

You are carrying an alien parasite

I like dynamic foil, so in the character creation process, each character has the potential to have another character who is diametrically opposed to them. This will not be obvious on the surface, because each profession will have a secret card that is its opposite. The character holding the secret card will know who their opposition is, and will have to decide on keeping their secret, or if they will try to act on it.

Secret Robot

Opposed by Profession: Bladerunner/Cleaner

Gambling Debt/Black Mark

Opposed by Profession: Bounty Hunter

Wanted Criminal

Opposed by Professions:Bounty Hunter, Enforcer

Alien Parasite

Opposed by Profession: Medicine

No like button and I didn't want to interrupt just to say, "Like".

But, "Like" or...something. :)

After the relaunch and we catch some steam again, all in for another attempt at a StrolenCon. It isn't over, not by a longshot!!! Bring you Envelopes!
