or this really is a science fantasy world.....
OldThing was originally the slang word, but has come to be the
official" word for things from the Days of the Ship. This is EarthTech. While the Preserver beliefs prevented them from bringing the higher end of Earth Technology (Nano-Tech, Teleporter, VR Spectrums, PlasmaMotors, etc), there were still pieces of higher technology that were "acceptable". While the Colonists did not think they were going to rely on said items, they would be handy to "fall back upon".
Since Kerren has fewer accessible resources than expected, the daily technology is now what the original colonists forsaw. The colonists carefully stashed OldThings away for future needs.
There are still a few items, salvaged from the ship, still in daily use. Windows from the ship, a few doors, and bulkheads are found in a number of Warrens. Smaller, personal items, also exist. They are passed down through family lines over the years.
OldThing the players could encounter examples:
The Computer is the only piece of OldThing that is used on a regular basis. It is still at FirstDown, near the PrimeWarren. It makes projections of weather, keeps track of warrens/ populations/ goods, and helps people design things. The system is activated once or twice a week, depending on the weather and the local fauna.
It is also linked to the SpaceTrackingSystem. Randomly, the system is booted up and a scan is taken. It can not be kept running, as it will attract every saurian and draconian in the world, and given its power level.. it will drive them all insane.
At the PrimeWarren there is a cache of laser rifles, and a few other "personal" weapons. There is supposed to be one operating hopper left, but there is no one who could fly it (perhaps someone could learn with the Computer's help). It is said that this arsenal also has a number of lower earth tech weapons that came from one of the original colonist's personal collection. This collection is said to be enough to arm several wings.
Sitebee has a medical area that has OldThing equipment. While the Healers are there and practicing standard Kerren medicine, they occasionally fire up an imager or a growth modifier to help a patient who they can not easily help.
Alderon Warren is lit internally by Oldthing lights. They are non electric, so they do not attact saurians or draconians.
