Citadel Epub / Excursions 5 New Topic
« on: November 17, 2017, 04:09:58 PM »
    Hey Strolenites!
The Citadel's very own anthology - Excursions from the Citadel
http://www.exftc.com/ - will be kicking off the development cycle for its fifth issue very soon.  Past issues have been on Eldritch Voices, Shifts in Shape, Wizards, and Steeds. We need a fresh, new, hot-off-the-press theme for the next one.

Please list your suggestions!

    - angels & demons
    - betrayal
    - choice
    - dead and undead
    - elemental
[/list]

How about  "The Day you Die" then expand it to "The Day you Die and beyond" this could pull in the Dead/Undead topic as well.

Yeah, if we go with the "Day You Die"  (or however we finally phrase it) it will be very interesting to see each author's interpetation of that prompt.

It sounds like everyone is down for "day you die". Do we need an official vote?

Welcome to Issue 5:

Excursions from the Citadel is first and foremost a writers’ group. We publish as a way to give our writing some exposure and provide structure.  The goal is to have fun (I assume you enjoy writing and reading short fiction) and to improve our writing. In order to contribute you will need an email address. If you want to contribute, please PM me an email address and I will you a link to the shared drive.

Our new topic/theme is “the day you die”. Here are the essential instructions for this issue.

1) Genre. As always, we want to work only with speculative fiction stories. The sci-fi or fantasy elements may be subtle, but they need to be there and they need to be central to the plot or setting.

2) Serial stories, previously posted or published stories and Fan-fiction. We are looking for only original stand-alone stories that have never been posted or published elsewhere. No serial stories, fiction set in your “world” is fine, but it should be a stand-alone piece.

3) Word Count. We want short fiction between 2000-20000 words.

4) Deadline: April 1st is the deadline for submission of your final draft. This should be a draft you are willing to publish. To submit the final draft of your story, place a google doc with the text of your story in the COMPLETED DRAFTS sub-folder of the Issue 5 folder in  the google drive. During the month of April we will review the stories and we may ask for some revision. But we may accept the story as is, thus make sure the April 1st version is something your are comfortable with.

5) The Workshop Folder:  There will be a workshop folder in which you can post drafts of your story using google docs.  Other writers and reviewers can and should make comments, suggestion and critiques.  You are not obliged respond to those comments, but I think the workshop is the most useful and productive aspect of this project.  So I hope that everybody will contribute to and participate in the workshop.  But please try and post a fairly clean draft in the workshop folder.  If errors in spelling, grammar and formatting are too distracting then you will get less feedback on the contact of the story itself and the quality of the prose.

6) Reviews: Stories will be reviewed in April by any member of the Citadel that wishes to contribute. Reviewers will fill out a form on the google drive.  Only stories that receive a majority of positive reviews will be selected for publication. Authors will eventually get to read all the reviews, but the reviews will be confidential. Authors will not know the name of the reviewer.

7) The Day You Die: This tagline should NOT suggest that the stories should be written in second person.  As a reader I’ve generally found second person to be a little obnoxious and distracting. If you want to try a second person story, go for it, but don’t feel compelled to write in second person.

8) Life and Death: The topic is intended to add a bit of foreshadowing to each story.  The main character should die in each story.  But this being speculative fiction the definitions of life and death are at the whims of your creativity energy. However, you are going to redefine life and death…and I hope some of you do…make that a focus of your story.

9) The Day You Die: We want to talk about the day the character dies. This does not necessarily mean cover 24 hours but rather confine the action and the conflict to a small scale with regard to the central character. I am all for epic space opera type settings, but do your best to limit the events of your story to a small frame of time (with regard to the main character’s perception of time). But again, I’m look forward to seeing how people play with this topic.
