[Operation One] Cosmic Era Mecha Game
« on: March 26, 2014, 08:03:30 AM »
Arco San Louis sits at a confluence of borders, rivers, and nations within the Atlantic Federation. The city, built approximately 70 miles from the site of Old St. Louis is a model of Cosmic Era efficiency. The Central Arco rises and impressive 1.75 kilometers from the ground, with another 1000 feet of aerials and antenna rising from it's core spire. A shining brushed steel edifice, it's fluer de lis picked out in gold paint on each of it's four primary faces is 300 meters tall. Around the feet of the arco the city rises up, half a dozen demi-arcos, almost all owned by corps and megacorps, and heavily involved in industrial applications. Those buildings are in turn nestled up against high rises built up from an elevated false ground level of clean streets with efficient public transportation, greenspace, and all the amenities that make Arco San Louis one of the top ten desirable cities in North America, and the 11th nicest city in the Atlantic Federation. Beneath the false floor the real ground level, in perpetual shadow of the city above it, and the geofront foundations that hold everything up 'cover up' the cities gang problems, it's urban poor who congregate in the underground housing projects, and the debris littered subterranean boulevards that connect the undercity to the economically repressed rim of the city. There are no favelas, no centuries old buildings that have been turned into massive tenements, that was all abandoned and left behind when Arco San Louis broke away from Old St. Louis.

The Mechadrome for the city is located on the western side, and it houses a full mecha battalion, 40 active machines in 8 squads. There is also helocraft support in the form of both gunships and troop carriers that can deploy power armor troopers as the need arises. The city itself retains the services of not one, but two Self Propelled Turrets, the Spirit of St. Louis (a first gen autocannon armed crawler) and Kingshammer (a last gen rail gun armed crawler)

The city retains such a large garrison as it is a rarity, Arco San Louis is a free city, not attached to any of the nations surrounding it, and the garrison it has is drawn half from locals, and half from units rotated in through the Atlantic Federation's Armed Forces. The city, long tired of constant fighting between the Rocky Mountain Republic, the Republic of Texas, the Republic of the Great Lakes and even a brief occupation by the Confederation of Southern States, declared its independent state, used mercenary forces to repel the nationalist forces, and requested recognition and protection from the Federation governing council. Since then, the city has been a hotspot of activity. Free Cities draw in megacorps, and the city's security contracts are lucrative and draw in mercenary companies and security companies as well. The mix of Federation troops, mercenary troops, and Free City Troops makes things interesting.

It doesn't help that even Amerikka Command wants a piece of the city.

(OOC - Welcome to Arco San Louis, feel free to arrive, brief introduction of your characters, and head to mechadrome/barracks. Debriefing at 0800.)

Sergeant Stressor stared out the window of the helo dyne, admiring the glimmer of early morning sunlight off the towering steel and glass monoliths that made up a large portion of the visible city. Also the place, (she noted with no small amount of pride,) she had been entrusted with protecting, and would call home until chance saw fit to drop her and her future lance mates in the thick of things and put their skills to the test.

Her thoughts drifted, between the numerous drills and procedures that had become second nature by the end of her training, and invisible weight her sergeant stripes carried on her collar, refocusing on the present as the helo settled onto the tarmac with a soft jar.

She glanced down at her watch, noting the time, barely enough to stow her gear and grab a quick shower before debriefing, hopefully the rest of her squad would be on time as well, she hated being the first one to briefings, it always made her feel eager, and impatient at the silence of an empty room.

Giving the pilot a brief salute she exited the vehicle, grasping her duffle bag in one gloved hand and made her way to the barracks, paying close attention to the flow of personnel around her. One could learn a lot about a postings over all morale by the soldiers carried themselves, and the condition of its bulkheads and service ways.

She kept an eye out for any sign of her team as well, having familiarized herself with their dossiers on the flight earlier.

It was a culture shock, plain and simple. It had been three weeks now since Maxine's family moved up to the Arcos from the undercity. The cleanliness of the overworld still left her speechless at times. She still wasn't clear on what her father had done to earn all this money and just exactly what his new job entailed, but he came home clean and happy every day at least. And somehow his position had opened doors for her as well. Throughout the years she had gone from operating lowly loader mechs to the lower tiers of millitary hardware once she joined the service, but her latest promotion sure had been a surprise. Usually the underdwellers could never dream of climbing this high.

She knew it wouldn't be easy, and she would have her work cut out for her earning respect from these posh stuckup ashies. But she was determined to earn her spot, and in terms of skill, she already had. The town car pulled up outside the mechadrome, it wasn't the first time she was there, but it was the first time she went in through the front. She took a deep breath, shouldered her bag and walked in through the guard posts brandishing her  forearm with the ID tattoo as a shield.

The flavour of Amy's lipgloss had barely faded when he pulled up to the gate.  He was appraised by the biometric scanners and barely slowed down as he guided his hoverbike through the gate.  This base was not far from his previous posting, but it felt like it would be vastly further away.

He got off his bike, a Meritech 3000, given to him to promote the bike while he was still a 3rd rate celebriety.  He service had dropped him off the paparazzis radar, such it was, and he suspected they might try to take it back someday. His parents, of course, hated it, much as they hated virtually every choice he had made with his life. Good.

He found his room easily enough, stowed his few items and readied for the brefing.  He detested being late and made certain not to dawdle.

The room was empty when he reached it. He took a seat near the front at whim, normally he took the rear row on such things.

Marsha inhaled deeply as she entered the briefing room, the smell of stale coffee, boot polish and sweat mingled to remind her no matter the posting, some things were always the same. She gave a curt nod to the man seated near the front of the room, adjusting the data slate in the crook of her arm and sitting down with a empty seat between them.

"Sergeant Stressor, Shadow Hawk pilot and long range gunner." She offered by way of introduction, letting a touch of warmth enter her features as she gave the man a polite smile. If her file on him was accurate, he was a bit of a hotshot, but unlike most of them, actually had a degree of skill and potential to match his bravado.

"Any word on the op today? I'm expecting patrol, or war-games in the sims so command can see how us new comers stack up to the rest around here."

A screen flickered to life, there was a brief flashing of images, the emblem of the ASL, the gold fluer de lis, then the emblem of the Atlantic Federation, then the badge of the Federation Mecha corps. Then they were all looking at the stern face of Adjuct Nova, the command and communications officer in charge of maintaining a link between the impressive CIC in the arco, and military forces in the field.

'Good morning, cadets,' the woman said. 'Welcome to base initiation, and welcome to Arco San Louis' she shuffled a small stack of papers and looked back into the camera/monitor. 'This is going to be a short briefing, as the full forces of the garrison are on activated alert as of 2200 hours yesterday. There is an elevated risk of hostile activity in perimeter zone 11, as two of our recon drones in the area went offline, and a third drone confirmed contact with a potentially hostile force in the area.'

'Your squad will be designated Talon, and your mission is to scout sector 10, south of sector 11, and ensure that if there are hostiles in sector 11 they do not escape pursuit forces already deployed. If there are any questions, please make them short, if these questions are not priority, please hold them until the patrol debriefing this evening.'

Derek was about to answer Sargent Stressor when the viewscreen came on.

Time to go already. Direct and to the point. He was going to like it here.

Sgt. Cobain kept quiet at the end of the debriefing. The mission was straightforward, and since the enemy was not likely to stay in their designated sector, there was a good chance this would be an eventful one.

Good.

Sgt. Cobain was not one of those who hoped to serve their time quietly in some quiet backwoods.  He meant to make his mark, or earn a trip to Valhalla.  Either worked.

He was interested to see what his team mates would say, if anything.

Maxine arrived just in time to see the screen flicker on, she immidiately stood to attention.
-
"Ma'am, yes ma'am." She saluted smartly then turned to the others.

"Good morning. I'm First Sergeant Maxine Sanchez." She introduced herself. "If there are no questions, we leave immidiately."
She felt eager to prove herself.

Better late than never, Marsha thought to herself, mildly annoyed their commander nearly missed her first briefing. Even if she had, she added with a mental shrug, that's what Buck sergeants were for, to take up the slack and keep things moving in the right direction.

"Only one ma'am, according to my files our team has two more on it's roster, are they unavailable for today's op or already in the field?" She kept attention focused on the display screen, hoping to redirect Novas focus away from the lead sergeants near tardiness and towards other matters.

The question was valid by itself, but keeping the higher ups from noticing any perceived weakness of their lance was a more pressing concern.

'A valid question commander Sanchez, but sergeants Jeta Amata and Ada Aronu did not require a briefing on this matter, as they have been posted here for seven and eleven weeks. This was intended to be a basic introductory briefing on base protocol and procedure, mechwarriors, but the situation warrants a full deployment of a mecha net to ensure that the insurgents are finally captured or neutralized. I do apologize for the inconvenience.' Adjuct Nova said.

She gestures to a man standing by the door, 'Private Bozeman will show you to your vehicles, I will transfer data to your machines and will be in communications. I think we will make an effective team."

The screen winked out, and Bozeman lead the pilots from the briefing room and down towards the mechadrome. There is a brief ride on an electric cart as the mech bays are almost a kilometer away from the CIC.

(OOC - brief amount of time if anyone wants to talk/question Bozeman)

Marsha nodded, giving her the proper salute as the monitor dimmed, rising and following Bozeman a few steps behind Sergeant Sanchez. "Insurgents? Any intel on the size and disposition of the op for,"  (opposing force) "would be valuable." She kept her tone level, noting quietly Nova had neglected to clarify the location or operational status of the remaining two units of her lance.

"Looks like it's going to be the three of us, standard  V deployment?" She directed her second question to Sergeant Sanchez, feeling slightly out of place with the chain of command ending one soldier beneath her.

'It's full deployment' Bozeman said, 'your squad mates are already on station and waiting for us, you guys were supposed to get a welcome briefing not a deployment, and Amerikka Command sends all sorts of different stuff at us. Usually just gun crawlers and skeletrons.'

He pushed the little electric cart and quickly the towering hangers of the Mechadrome appeared. Only the pilot gantry was still in place on the new arrivals machines. The engines were already humming and the ground crews saluted as the pilots disembarked from the cart.

Sgt. Cobain exited the cart, and did a quick circle at ground level of his mech, checking for any issues.
He repeated the process from the Gantry, scanning the various components and systems he could see from that vantage point.  Finally he took his seat in the Hatchetman's cockpit.

He accessed the systems maintenance log and alert board, his eyes out for any irregularity .  Ammo - full, heat-sinks - operational.  He considered doing an efficiency test - running the reactor up to see how fast the sinks would dump the heat, but decided against it.  The hatchetman could run close to the wire on heat, especially when jumping, and having all of them working at full was critical.  Also, the AI seemed to behave better when Derek jumped through all of the maintenance hoops.
"They didn't say anything about fire support, did they?" he said, knowing the answer.

Sgt Jeta Amana laughed, helmet tucked under his arm. The helmet was emblazoned with a large red fleur de lis and a number 5 (Redshirt). Amana mounted the gantry, thumbing his throat mike to talk to Cobain, 'My friend,' he said in a rich African baritone, 'we are the fire support'.

"Negative, I want a 100-200 meter spread line. They might have artillery, and we'll cover more ground that way. Pending how the FOV looks we'll be the most efficient if we spread out."

-

Finally, go time. She climbed up, strapped herself in and started checking the systems. Over the intercom she heard;

Quote
"They didn't say anything about fire support, did they?"

She flicked on the intercom button.
"That's a negative sergeant. No need to fret though, I'm all the support you'll need. Bravo Echo Zulu Tango 21, ready to roll out. Look sharp Talon squad, let's give em hell."

She squeezed the joysticks in anticipation, blue screens flickered in her face, the only light inside this cramp metal coffin. The roar of the stabilizer mostly muted. Now THIS was living.

The ground shook as Talon squad disembarked. Three Wolverines, even with the patina of more than a handful of decades of service, were an awe inspiring sight. The lean Hatchetman might have been slender in comparison, but the shoulder vulcan cannon and heavy anti-armor ax promised to tear things apart with ease. And an unusual sight in the Federation, the Shadow Hawk, a mainstay of the Pacific Rim Coalition, strode out into the sun.

'Nova here,' a voice purred through the group link, 'the carry-all is currently deployed in sector 31 with civilian operations, so you will have to get to sector 11 the old fashioned way, walking,' Nova said with a hint of amusement. 'I've uploaded nav-points to your mechs, its about 30 klicks from where you are now, so time to get moving.'

'There is potential fire support, Kingshammer has moved from static position to active patrol and is in sector 3. For my new ducklings, Kingshammer is the pride of Arco San Louis, an Alacorn class self propelled turret, armed with triple heavy rail cannons. If things get dicey, you can call for support, but I will tell you forces in sectors 9 and 10 have target priority.' Nova said.

Sgt. Cobain smiled in his cockpit - he enjoyed bravado, but he also enjoyed the effects of heavy artillery on the enemy.   A whole pack of Alpha's here, but he knew that the fear of appearing weak could be a flaw - he had used this flaw against others in the ring, and it appeared those lessons would apply here as well.

"Roger that," she said to the lead sergeants deployment. She paused to snag the maintenance sheet from a near by tech and quickly entered her mecha, giving it a once over while powering up systems, before tossing out the closing hatch onto the grated flooring with an approving nod.

"Good morning Ms. Carlyle, you should find an updated file on today's operation ready for download." She kept her voice warmer, more welcoming when addressing the mecha's AI, knowing from past experience it responded  much better to kindness that cold professionalism.

As she fastened the chin strap she licked on communications, catching the tail end of the joint conversation as she felt the weight of the mecha shift as she assumed manual control.

"Time to earn our pay checks." She said quietly, assuming her position within the lance, an eye on her sensors.

The trek to Sector 11 was uneventful, there was already a worn path, as the mecha performed routine patrols through the area. Talon Squad would have been able to make it to their sector just by looking at the ground. There was plenty of radio chatter, and the LAIs were listening in on computer chatter, the other squads were doing their deployment, and there was a good number of helocraft in the area. Sector 11 had one installation, a forestry creche, that was in the process of restoring the ground cover and woodlands of the swampy terrain around sector 7 through 14.

The terrain was flat, the only obstructions were the irregular copses of seeded trees.

The fact that none of the LAIs or sensors had noticed the Pre-Fab base sitting in the gutted ruin of the creche center, nor the vehicles parked around it, was a concern.

(OOC - Talon Squad is approaching a pre-con base, three towers, armed. Visual inspection spots 3-5 armored vehicles, and an unknown number of insurgent fighters. Electronics are not functioning, and aside from internal systems, everything is being jammed/scrambled since there is a Shroud device in the area. Talon company has the option to retreat outside of the shroud device's range and call for help, or move in an engage the terrorists who have not only set up a base in ASL territory, but have destroyed a biorepopulation center to do it)

Derek cursed as the communications dropped off - the sudden silence almost physical in its absence.

He thought back to his training on standard ops in such circumstances, but drew a blank.  He looked over at Sanchez's mech to see how she was reacting to this.
Perhaps it was just him.

He began running some diagnostics, though with half the systems down it was hard to figure out anything.  He hoped the leader's morse code was up to snuff, opening his hatchetless hand in a pattern.

Maxine stopped her machine. Her eyes grew big behind her sunglasses. "Madre Maria...Jammed." She swore and looked around at the others. She signalled back to Cobain.  .-. --- --. . .-.

She gestured to Marsha to go wide on her right, and Cobain on her left.

To Sgt. Amana she signed. ... - .- -.-- / -... .- -.-. -.- / ..-. .. .-. . / ... ..- .--. .--. --- .-. -

I haven't heard a proper name for stormtrooper yet, but he can just flank us.

Looking to see Marsha and Cobain in position, she locked and loaded, fired her boosters and charged in, weapons at the ready. Not much to do but pray and spray now. They already knew, and regrouping would only buy them time to flee. Maxine figured that the jamming device was either out in the open or on a rooftop somewhere, and if she spotted it, that would be her first target.

Marsha paused  momentarily as communications faded under a wall of static, half raising her 90mm cannon and scanning for potential snipers. "Carlyle, see if you can trace the interference and locate the source of the jamming." She gave a nod at Maxine's order,  flanking out to the right in a wide half circle, keeping her eyes alert for any movement as she waited for her AI companion to hopefully flag the offending shroud generator.

The screens flickered as Carlyle struggled with the interference jamming the full EM band. 'Estimating the jamming strength to be consistent with a category 4 mobile generator, short range, but the interference keeps changing, faster than I can adapt for. So it is at least a 3rd gen shroud generator. Best estimate is that the unit is within 3 kilometers of our location' the LAI said. 'We should respond quickly, if there is a shroud generator, there is a chance that this group could have televipers and units in our squad could already be facing hacking attempts.'

By this point the Command forces had mobilized, moving their assault vehicles into a battle line, presenting five open top tanks to face the mecha. Each tank was armed with a pair of laser cannons and it was only a matter of seconds before the snakes started firing.

Derek had seen enough, and braced himself.

Time to get a look see.

Partly to draw fire as a difficult target, but mainly to get a nice arc into the tops of the tanks, he jammed his Jump jets, hard, launching the 45 tons of death high into the air.

At the peak of his jump, he sprayed his AC-10 in an arc at the tops of the tanks. It was a sparse, hurried spray, but if the crews were as green as he hoped, the incoming depleted uranium storm might spook 'em, hopefully more than spook em.  Open top plus automatic gunfire should be a pleasant combination.

"Hounddog - see if you can find me the jammer while we're up here!"

Derek hoped his trajectory took him out of the range of elevation for the tanks, and he picked one to land directly on.

Come on, he's an ax man :)
