Need motivations for a noblewoman
« on: May 16, 2013, 03:19:43 PM »
She likes race horses, she's kind of like that woman from Hidalgo... I believe that movie was called. She travels a lot, leaving her husband at home to take care of the family business. She works for an undercover information broker, of who she knows nothing about, she only gets contacted by third parties. She does this for the feel of adventure and intrigue.

She is a countess.
She enjoys making bets.
She loves dashing rogue types, but she is faithful to her husband.
She likes to portray herself as a whimsical loud mouth who's always had too much to drink, but she's much brighter than she lets on.
She has a lot of influential friends and has the ear of a queen and a princess.
I don't see her as religious at all, more the practical type.
Her family is very well off, and holds a record of remaining neutral, although they have sided with one or the other side on occasion in secrecy.
I haven't decided whether or not she has any children yet, but since she is middle aged and still with her husband, I imagine she must have children.

But I can't for the life of me come up with what drives her. What does she want/need?

Couple of ideas.

Maybe she pursues the adventure & intrigue as a burden that was passed on to her by a deceased relative.  Her uncle, cousin, brother, etc passed away, and she was contacted shortly afterwards.  Maybe it's something that only she (as a direct descendant of such-and-such) can do.

Or perhaps she does have children, but they were placed in a boarding school by this mysterious contact.  If she doesn't work for them, she may never see her children again.  And of course, if she tells her husband or steps out of line, they may just . . . disappear.

I think you already did a fine job of painting her desires/needs...She yearns for excitement and intrigue in her life. That in and of itself is a powerful driver.

Maybe its because I watch too much BBC, but she seems a classic archetype, who secretly and ingeniously murders/ruins/destroys anyone who gets in her, or her husband's way (he remains clueless), while maintaining her veneer. As Dossta mentions, she also sounds the type who would do ANYTHING to make sure her children survive and thrive.

Perhaps, with her having the ear of the queen and a princess, what she really wants is POWER, but goes about acquiring it in a complicated and convoluted way, slowly strumming the myriad strands of her spider-web of intrigue.

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

I think you can go many ways with her motivations as Dossta and Muro already mentioned.
For me personally, the one that stood out most to me was the first one Muro suggested- that she yearns for excitement.  I think it practically jumped out at me after I read the line "She loves dashing rogues types...."

She started out as a minor filler character, she was supposed to add a little flavour to a ball. That first thing sounds like she will take up a lot of room. While I do want her to become a major player at some point, I think she's a bit too proper to go around dungeoneering, if that's what you meant? Sorta Indiana Jones kind of thing. I should also mention that she's 39.

The boarding school idea is interesting. Even though she is seemingly without enemies, I suppose she would need some, in order to spice things up. It would also get her a personal plot hook. But having her children in the hands of some mysterious stranger while she's out galavanting without a care in the world seems kind of odd. Unless that's also a ploy... Ooooh, maybe I can tie it to the templars! Yeah, that makes sense...

1) Yeah, but she's allready getting her fill from working with the information broker. And she's too old to be doing anything more dramatic.

2) You make her sound evil and ruthless. I want her to be a character that can be trusted. But of course, she could seemingly be one way and yet...hohoho...Oh, I'm a sucker for evil chars, that much is true. Maybe she worships Lolth... Nah, that would be taking things too far.

I think it practically jumped out at me after I read the line "She loves dashing rogues types...."

Ugh, typo. Fixed.

Okay, so some mysterious player (the templars) have whisked away her children. Since she's 39, I suppose she conceived late in life, they'll probably be teenagers by now. The boarding school idea still works. However, this must have happened only recently, since the father remains clueless. Perhaps she has forged letters from them in order to keep up the facade.

That would give her yet another reason to work for the information broker, heck. Maybe he has promised her information on her kidnappers if she work for him.

She is willing to do anything concearning her children, even walk over bodies. No doubt a little added power would also help her find her children, so that makes sense for her to pursue. It would also explain her travels since she's not sure where her children are being held, and possible missions from her employer. Perhaps since she is yearning for adventure, she has even come to enjoy herself despite being consumed by worry. No doubt that would create shame.

But besides finding out about her kidnappers. What is she planning? She doesn't know her enemy yet.

I should probably mention, that the templars are protecting an ancient secret from leaking out. And some of the noble houses in her country are unwittingly tied to this secret. In fact, in one way, the whole country is. While her house secretly aided one specific house that was destroyed due in part to the meddlings of the templars. Her only tie to that house is her friendship to the last remaining heir, who has been made an outcast. But I don't think the templars find him important enough.

Also, as a further twist. Her husband has had an affair in the past with another noblewoman. A powerful widow who can really be described as the spider in the web when it comes to local politics.
