Best (Worst?) of the B's
« on: March 05, 2013, 01:29:53 PM »
I'm sure I'm not the only one here with an unhealthy love of terrible cinema. I figured we could use a thread to talk about our favorites or most recently watched monstrosities.

I'll start it off with a clip of one of my recent views, "War of the Robots" (the 2 I've watched since were so bad I couldn't find trailers):

War of the Robots 1978

The clip doesn't do the movie full justice, though. The trip through the asteroids, the various alien races, pointless robot slaughter, the costumes, the incredible dialogue... all of these and more are what make this such a gem.

He is clothed in faded brown robes.
His craggy face is turned up, bathed in moonlight;
He looks for his goddess to smile upon him.

I was hooked from the first sounds of "Pew-Pew"

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

That silver-clad man with the pageboy haircut is an incredible shot.

Muro and I were talking some time back about '70s kung fu movies and I brought up Master with Cracked Fingers, which I have the privilege of owning on DVD.

Master With Cracked Fingers

It "stars" "Jackie Chan", who is shows up for roughly the first half of the movie. Then they obviously get a replacement who looks nothing like Chan, which they cover with a wig, blindfold, and wide angle shots. The thing is actually pieced together from at least two different movies, probably more, and repacked repeatedly for Western audiences. It's fairly insane, as is a lot of early Chan stuff.

In the Dust of Stars.  I am working under the the hypothesis that all east german cinema was "B" and In the Dust of Stars, has it all pointless nudity, nonsensical pacing and scale (where is this canal they are building), and best of all a heavy handed political message.

Thoughts on watching that:
  • Why does that guy have a spring on top his chaise lounge?
  • Everybody wave enthusiastically! Okay, now everyone wave with an arm chop!
  • ...Who showers like that?
And so forth.

More thoughts:
1. I also must know why a spring hangs from his chaise lounge.
2. Someone tell that snake-lover that his snake isn't "very poisonous"
3. Where is Suko??!! Who saw Suko last?

Watching three minutes of war of the robots , I can only assume that this movie had strong influence on Spielberg's work,

A) Warnings about the moral and ethical complications of "creating life" and messing with the work of the gods

B) The sexual flirtatious overtones that form a back drop to dense intellectual material: example Jeff Goldblum explaining chaos theory to Laura Dern.

C) Instead of seeing the spaceship, you see the characters reaction to the spaceship: Close Encounters

D) A bunch of blonde bad guys.

Hands of Steel.

Ah, 80's dystopian futures, how naive you were:

Atomic Cyborg / Hands of Steel - trailer -

He's human, just enhanced as a cyborg. Or is he? Watch the whole movie to see the surprise ending.
