Crimson Wreath Tournament
« on: July 22, 2015, 07:35:16 PM »
So my group is currently playing the Pathfinder system, and we're about half way through our current story arc, which is where i want the climax to be. the BBEG is a group of would-be heroes who were victims of circumstance at some point in their lives because i wanted to build a campaign off of the duality of power. To give you a probably not so brief overview of the world climate, here we go:

The BBEG group call themselves The Deadly Seven (zero relation to the anime. I first heard of the anime several months after drafting the group). Each individual member represents the worst possible form of the sin they represent. Pride is a Female Elf Paladin who is the literal offspring of a goddess and was raised as such for her entire life. She believes that because of her lineage she is the most perfect being to ever exist and perceives everyone else as trash, while her younger sister, Envy has become so consumed with envy because her sister was raised like a goddess and she was raised in rags and poverty that she has now become murderous to anything she envies. Part of her apocrypha is that she once killed a the child a pregnant woman carried for the love the mother felt for it, then killed the mother for the child she carried. Real dark and disturbed stuff.

While The Deadly Seven as a group of individuals are horrible, the group as a whole has a tendency to do all the wrong things for all the right reasons. They set up a tyrannical government and enforced a series of super restrictive laws on the land they control to eliminate centuries-long feuds  and genocidal tendancies as well as bring the rich and well to do countries down to the level of the more impoverished countries. The set up a prostitution ring centered in Cheliax (Golarion's prior slave trading hub for those who are not familiar with the world) and has expanded the prostitution ring all through out half the content to generate revenue for all of their controlled countries. They've created work for millions but it's neither the most desirable nor hospitable jobs in the world.

The players and now The Deadly Seven (after last game session) are acutely aware that there is an underground movement brewing to overthrow their reign. In response, The Deadly Seven have razed a city that was commonly referred to as "The City of Freedom" and built a massive arena on it's ashes. This is the launching point for the first ever Crimson Wreath Tournament. The hopes of this tournament? To locate suitable and reliable guards to protect them and their seat of power from the resistance.

Without making it this too lengthy (as i fear it already is) I'm currently trying to concoct some truly evil challenges for the Crimson Wreath Tournament. A tournament in which most of the teams will be comprised of Evil aligned groups of five members save for the players' group and the group formed by the resistance. The first challenge I've come up with would be something similar to a VIP protection mission. Each team would be assigned to protect a group of four small children from three increasingly difficult waves of monsters. Color commentator would announce at the instruction that the monsters will have zero focus on the group members themselves and if all of the children die, the team is eliminated and will be executed. Wave one pretty normal crap, wave two harder pretty normal crap. soon as the last monster falls, wave three, the children transform into some horrific monstrosity and become the third wave themselves. I would also like the final challenge to be the group fighting off with another group of adventurers in the finals. So really all i need is one challenge for in between.

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. By the by, i know this is all really dark s**t, but these people are made to be a legitimate terror, so fearsome that nobody has dared stand up to them, or survived long enough for there to be a story of in a decade or so.

Just for those who were curious, i started the tournament yesterday with my group, we were not able to get the entire way through the tournament. What i ended up doing was opening the tournament with a fast paced elimination challenge where each team had 18 seconds (or three rounds of combat) to eliminate as many CR 2 goblins as they can. That eliminated some 50 something teams down to 8. it also was used as a conduit to demonstrate the challenge so they could develop strategy for the challenge. and to demonstrate the savagery of the deadly seven by having them ruthlessly reduce a party that failed to keep all of their members alive to a red mist.

Next challenge was an obstacle course, rolling a D20 to dictate the seriousness of the challenges i did about a dozen challenges, the most challenging of which was a solid cast-iron door that could not be broken through, and needed to be lifted to be moved. A strength challenge was needed to succeed. rolling a critical fail dropped the door and triggered a prismatic spray trap.

For the semi-finals, the team will be doing the VIP challenge where they are tasked to protect a small group of individuals against three waves of monsters of increasing difficulty. in which the third wave will be the individuals who will have transformed into demons of some form, most likely pit fiends or some other medium-large sized rather strong demon.

Finals will be fighting the last remaining team which could very possibly be intervened by the deadly seven itself.

The overall goal of this tournament was to get the players closer to the deadly seven to make it easier for them to take them on without getting their faces wrecked.

I meant to reply to this after you first posted it. I didn't really have anything, but wanted you to know I tried. Talking about an Epic game! I have never been in such a game where the characters were so politically powerful. Sounds like a lot of fun though and glad you figured out a way to do what you needed. Figured you would come up with something.

Flying Squirrel – Strolenati Guild
Grothar Rockfury - Dwarvish Guild
Minor Minion - Cartographer's Guild
