Pics and formatting
« on: September 06, 2012, 10:12:36 AM »
So I am interested in doing some posts with pics, what would be the best way to do this? Does linking directly to the source URL count as hotlinking? i know this is bad and frowned on, plus I don't want pics I link to suddenly turn into wagging finger, stop signs, or goatse.

Also: I want to put text next to a pic, so I could have a pic, and a column of text next to it. Is this possible, or am I having teh dumb?

Thanks

You should be able to use the editor "Insert Image" option to upload the image to the Citadel server and it should give you a link from there. Alternately, you can use one of the free image upload services, and then pull the raw image link from that. I've never encountered issues with those, though uploading to the Citadel server would still be best.

You want to make the image that you've inserted float to the left. To do so, click on the image when you've inserted it, then change the "Position" dropdown from "None" to "Left". Alternately, if you want the column of text to be on the left side of the image, change it to "Right".

What he said. :)

You could also put the picture in a table but that will have ugly formatting involved with it. But that will put only the text you want next to it.

much thanks guys!

I've got some ideas in my head that won't stop bouncing around and it's that sort of thing where a picture is worth about 1500 words.

When I tried inserting a pic, it became really low quality, which was a problem, because my pic contained only text, which became illegible.

I know pics auto-correct to 400pix. But how come Tundra's image looked so clear? Was it because she linked rather than uploaded?

I saved mine as a .png at 1200pix, which is the absolute maximum width.

That is a direct link to the graphic. So if you upload it somewhere else and link to it, I believe it will grow with the content area. I think I made it so it didn't go outside.

1200px is very wide. A normal 15" to 17" monitor would default to 1024px wide so that image would go across the entire screen. Most monitors are bigger than that now, but the webpage useable area is the issue.

Attach your graphic in the forum which has bigger limits and let me take a look at it.

Incidentally, what is the Citadel's policy on images that we didn't create/commission?  Sometimes random images on Google can inspire a whole sub, and I'd like to post links to them or upload them here, but don't want to accidentally create a problem by doing so.

I slapped it in there. Text is somewhat difficult in the best of times. If you made it the same as you did but make the text bigger but keep the width the same, it would probably show better. For that, all I did was link directly to the forum image so it is easy to replace and test a bit.

My policy. Don't get me in trouble is my policy. Most graphics have linking permissions or reposting with a link as long as you don't do any type of editing beyond size. In most cases, if you use a picture, give credit and link back, the artist generally won't sue me about it. Generally.

Hmm, thanks. It's not very big, but at least it's readable(for me at least). I think I'll keep the exerpt though for clarity. I dunno if I can make the text much bigger without the sentences cutting off weirdly though.

Goss:

Ah, you wrote it in Papyrus.  The red letters are a little hard to pick out, at least on my monitor.
