Guilds: Discussion Thread
« on: September 03, 2012, 11:38:08 AM »
This was initially all hidden for a little bit while I worked on the very basic idea.

If we decide to support it then we will work out a few kinks and go for it.

Not sure if it is entirely ready for use, but it is close enough of to at least reveal it and see what people think. After all, I don't want to spend a ton of time on it if nobody wants to do it!

I think it can be fun though. Just a freeform way to start some challenges and get some other things happening.

This is meant to fun. If it isn't fun then forget about it!

I think this here is the most important part. This is entirely a self-improvement, amusingly-fun minigame. Nobody is required to participate, but anyone who wants to can have at it.

Things that need handling:
  • Base guild requirements
  • Initial quests for members

Also, are we truly focusing on fantasy classes, or are we allowed to branch out to other genres? The majority will just choose fantasy-oriented classes, since that's what most people identify most with, but I know a few people here who would probably self-identify with a different milieu.

Definitely branch out.

It makes sense to establish a baseline Guild Entrance requirement across the board. Initially I was thinking each guild would come up with their own but I also don't want it to be too difficult to gain entrance.

So, maybe three subs in that genre to apply to the Guild. Then perhaps if they did decide to do subguilds, that is where the Guilds could get fancy with some more difficult requirements or a Quest to join that subguild or something.

Definitely need some ideas for the initial Quests. Before we just had numbers, like I just did above, three submissions. Now, if we do it this way, we have the opportunity to be very creative. It may boil down to three subs but there can be a story there for better fun and justification.

Maybe the quests need to be Submissions upon themselves that Guild Members can either add to the Quest Codex and/or suggested subs....or as Scras mentioned in another post, a freetext to link quests together...

I'd say that elder authors could send guild applicants on quests - "writest thou a piece chiseled, a legend of a Sentient Starship, and thou shallst be rewardeth with death.. oh, sorry, XP".

I think that might be even more interesting if Elder members can ante up their own XP for personal quests.

That is easy enough to do.

Like I may have hinted at, I am sick of the constraints and trying to force everything into code. There are some things that, creatively, we can do so much better and have much more fun with. So if you think it is a good idea and can come up with a rule or a way to make something work, I am not going to say no.

I am trying to figure out how to start this train rolling however. I don't think I will be able to just throw up 6-8 Guilds, get people to volunteer as Guild Leaders and have it take off like a rocket ship. 6-8 Guild Leaders would pretty much exhaust all our active members. :)

So was thinking today we could start with a general Strolenati Guild and just sort of play with the thoughts we have and update/change them to the way it slowly turns out. The Strolenati Guild can have all these different Guilds under its overall umbrella. Then if we get traction in something, we split it off to its own forum and such. But for the near future, we can just play around with Strolenati levels.

Just thinking out loud before dinner. Haven't sat down and ironed anything out on that part yet but still plan to spend a little time tonight goofing off with the idea and brainstorming here.

I actually like that. I think that anybody should be able to put out a bounty for something, anything. It may not be an official Guild Quest, but a job. So maybe I have an advice requested sub that doesn't get love. Maybe they could give a 25XP bounty to assist in polishing or fixing it. It could really be anything. Scras could give a standing 10xp bonus from his horde for any ScrasTech additions. Extra XP for the most constructive comment on a sub. The ideas could be endless and, if you have XP, you can do it.

Did a few edits to other threads. Ready enough at this point to share the idea and see what the rest of the Citadelians think of the attempt.

Given the nature and requirements of joining these guilds, I think we should pull the usual time constraint for completing a quest.  It would be tricky for me to complete four(+) full submissions, maintain the quality requirement, comment/upvote on other entries, etc. within the time cap and call it fun.  Is it possible to stop that one week, six day clock attached to the Guild's Quest?  What do you think?

That clock waits for no man. Just kidding. I'm sure Strolen can show some leniency with the time.

And since we're in guild discussion mode, does everyone realize that once you pledge for a quest, your subs have to all be Quest-related. Can't take a "break" to post a non-quest sub, until your Quest is completed. Looking at you, Dossta and axle  :D

I think that rule will kill guilds.  There should be nothing that penalizes creation of subs.

I disagree slightly with that statement. What would stop you from creating whatever sub you like, and leaving it an in-work until you're done with whichever quest you pledged for?

Have to have some "skin in the game", me'thinks, otherwise, we can all just pledge ourselves to all guilds, and get around to them eventually/whenever, dulling the whole point of the Quest.

I kinda like the rule. Why pledge in the first place, if you don't want to challenge yourself on that particular topic?

Having said that, I'm easy and fine with whatever is decided.

It was my understanding (and perhaps this is faulty) that you could write whatever subs you want, but that you could only pursue one guild quest at a time.  In order to have that sub be counted towards the quest, you simply tag it with the appropriate freetext and update your quest post in the forums.  If that was wrong, then oops :) .  Strolen, a ruling please?  I can start my current quest over again, if need be.

All i know is, I was reprimanded by Strolen once, after inputting a stub that had nothing to do with my Strolenati Quest at the time...

from Guild rules thread, "...You are on a single Quest and, until you quit or finish it, all submissions go towards the completion of that Quest."

I'm not trying to be difficult, btw, just sayin'  :D

Yeah, my statement was too strong, though it reflected my mood at the time.

I had missed that provision on non-quest related subs.

I may have been too harsh and/or too inexact with my chastising of Muro. It was a lot of fun but probably scarred him for life. This is my intent and if I led it all astray I aplogize!!

The Guild Quest on the frontpage....means NOTHING when it comes to the Guilds except extra XP during the time of the Quest. It was only meant to highlight the Guild to get people to start using it. Once the Main Page Quest is over, you simply won't get the extra XP with the subs but it doesn't change, restrict, affect the Guilds in the forum at all.

Second, if I misled, I apologize. You can write submissions all day long just for fun. I agree there should be no restrictions. However, none of those submissions will count towards the Guild Quests unless, obviously, they meet the Guild requirements. So I am doing the Dwarven Awesome Quest that is the Coolest Evaaaar but I write 12 elf submissions (it may happen). None of them count towards the Dwarven Quest and if there is an Elven Guild, none of them will count towards that either, even if they match it perfect. I am pledged to the Dwarven Quest so until I fulfill that requirement (or beg to be released), my other submissions are simply submissions. When I finally do my Dwarf Submissions, I follow the directions and get credit and finish the Dwarf Quest. Now if I want to do the Elven Quest I can only count those after the day I pledge. No reach backs.

Hope that helps! Sorry for the confusion. I take all the blame. Hell, look at my last submission. I obviously can't write plainly.
