The 'I wish I'd thought of that' Topic.

I was in chat with Cheka_Man tonight and he mentioned an idea of his. He literally only said one or two lines at most.

Which instantly set my creativity on overdrive. Now after finishing up there, and giving the guy a trove of idea-treasure. I have that 'I wish I'd thought of it' moment.

It was his idea, but I want to write it! I shall now have to meekly ask if I can work on it together with him.

All it took was a couple of sentences from him, and it didn't take much at all for an entire history, practices, etc everything really to spring up in my mind; fully formed.

So, my fellow Strolenati. You've no doubt all found yourselves in a similar situation at one point or another. How did you handle it? What was it like? More importantly; what do I do now!? He threw the idea out there and now I'm wide awake still pouring forth ideas! Wanting to write! Yet not wanting to take his idea!

Talk to him.  You could probably both do a submission on the same premise and it come out widely different anyway.

That's pretty much how Lawbane was born. Cheka kicked out the core idea. I poked and prodded, bringing up different possibilities and doing reality checks while he filled in a lot of the details. That all happened in chat. I had some ideas about how I wanted to write it but it was his idea, his baby, so I left him to it. He finished the initial write-up and posted it but I was still itching to add in my ideas. I asked him what he thought about that and he was more than happy to put me on as a collaborator. In fact, we have a sequel in the works.

This is why collaborating is such a cool aspect of this site and why chat is such a wonderful way to get inspired. We are creative people and when you get a group of us together, the wheels start turning. I certainly wish I had more time to spend in chat collaborating on new stuff.

I usually ask first.  I usually write the sub then make the other person a co-author.  They can then input to their heart's content.
