Carve out your Destiny!! (or die trying)

Quote
Recent Events/Common Knowledge:

The War of Kings rages on in Westeros.

In King’s Landing, young Joffrey Baratheon sits upon the Iron Throne. Cersei Lannister, his mother, whispers in his ear. Tywin Lannister, his grandfather, has just been named Hand of the King, after successfully repelling Stannis Baratheon, the Usurper, on the Blackwater with allies and wildfire.

Stannis retreats against his will, against the insurmountable odds, and heads north in his remaining ships.

Robb Stark, the King in the North and his liege-men are in the Riverlands, preparing the march south to King’s Landing to slay Joffrey and avenge his father.

In the North, at The Wall, ravens’ messages speak of great battle, some great assault by the wildlings, and their King-beyond-the-Wall against the outnumbered Nightswatch. Besides the Wildlings, it is said Giants have stirred from their earthen lairs, and worse, the Others, the very dead themselves have risen from their frozen graves.

Far across the Narrow Sea in Essos, beyond the Free Cities, it is said the Mother of Dragons, a rumored Targaryen, assembles an army of unimaginable proportions, to march upon Westeros and reclaim her birthright.

War, pestilence, and famine plagues the Realms. And worst of all, Winter is coming.

1. You do not have to be familiar with the world, its people, or even the current events, as much as you have to be familiar with the MAP of Westeros (and Essos). It really helps in this game to understand where you are, where you came from, and where you're going. Place names pop up often in game. Mourn has been kind enough to post a map, or you can find one on Google.

Of course, knowing the world does help, so feel free to peruse various websites on the world of GoT at your leisure, as we play. I'd also be happy to answer any and all questions, as we go.

2. As of right this second, I'm still not sure what system to use, but something along the lines of "simple and flowing". Will figure it out shortly.

3. The game will commence with POV's up until the time (hopefully) you all come together.

4. Time-wise the game begins at the end of last night's final episode of season 2  For those who don't watch, just read the summary above. That covers the major "common knowledge" events. :)

5. There will be spoilers for any avid watchers or readers out there. You can and potentially will, run into GoT characters and can kill them (or be killed by them in turn). I will follow the flow of the books for the most part, but of course (!) you will carve out your own destinies, and make the world and its events, your own. Ok, that may have been bit dramatic. You are not kings and queens, so your adventures may begin as minor and on the periphery of events. At least at first...(evil laugh)

6. Don't remember 6 right now.

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

Rheyna, Odrin Tostro, Kat

The road south-east from Barrowton was no road at all, but simply a well-trod thoroughfare. Occasionally the three travelers would come across other men and women, most of them in a hurry. Few gave pause or more than a side-ways glance to the burly axe-man and the two young women.

Squid!” one old woman murmured in their direction, as she passed atop her ox-drawn wagon, and pointed a sausage-like finger in the direction she came from. The same direction Odrin Tostro, Rheyna and Kat were now heading.

Odrin was not sure what that meant but it sounded ominous enough. He paused as the old woman passed, and scratched at his stubbly chin, which he usually kept clean-shaven.

The Sun was setting behind them now, and soon they would need to find shelter. They were two days out from Barrowton. The terrain around them was depressing. Flat, with occasional rills and rocky mounds and pits, treacherous for horse-back riding.

Horses. They could certainly use three of them, Odrin thought, yet all his coin (given to him by the Bearded Priests) was used to free the young thief from Gaol.

He sighed and looked at his new charges. The two women were whispering something between themselves and Rheyna managed a giggle.

What now? Where to? Why were my orders so vague, the giant thought. Serve, Obey, Protect.

A few hours later it was nearly dusk. Another thought crossed his mind. Most of the travelers seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. North and west, back to Barrowton.

Danger ahead?

Odrin knew that Westeros was currently plagued by a great war, with various factions battling for something called the Iron Throne. How would he keep this girl safe?
Where should he take her?

His thoughts were interrupted by the cawing of crows, and up ahead he could see a swarm of the black birds, eviscerating the rotting carcass of a horse.

Katrina turned and gestured toward the dead horse up ahead, wrinkling her nose in disgust, "An unwelcome site so late in the eve." Averting her gaze from the gruesome sight she stared up at the last tendrils of dusk vanishing from the sky, her thoughts drifting back to earlier as a realization came to her.

"The old woman's mention of squid, it could be a reference to house Greyjoy given their sigil?" She let the suggestion hang in the air between the three of them, pulling her cloak tighter against the onset of the nights dampness.

Korley "Lannister" Hill

He crossed the Mander at Bitterbridge and made his way east, passing many battle-ravaged villages and thorpes. Long had he traveled from Casterly Rock, and soon he would arrive at King’s Landing. Though the journey was fraught with danger—all manner of enemies about—his trip was uneventful. Bastard would outrun any trouble (in numbers), and he feared no bandits or lone bravos.

Once, he had to slap some old man across the face with the flat of his blade, but that was deserved. The withered loon had spat at him, and made a rather rude gesture, in a random village Korley passed on his way.

Korley had a grin on his face most of the week’s long ride. He thirsted for glory, for battle, and for the fine women of King’s Landing. He yearned to meet his half-cousin, the Kingslayer, the only swordsman Korley conceded was better than him in all the realms. Even more, he yearned to meet Cersei. He had heard the whispers, all Lannisters had, maybe he could have a turn. But most of all, he was looking forward to meeting his father’s brother again, the indomitable Lord Tywin. Whatever Tywin wanted of him, Korley knew this was his chance to shine in front of his fellow lions.

Finally a day or so out of King’s Landing he settled for the night at a large roadside inn, outside the small town of Tumbleton. After giving excruciatingly specific instructions to the stable-hands on how to handle Bastard, Korley entered the inn.

A jolly, fat bard was strumming “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” and a few men (soldiers by the looks of them) were singing along, already deep in their cups. He glanced at the shields along the long-tables. The horse-head of House Bracken, the Roses of House Tyrell, and others he did not recognize.

Good, he thought. Lannister liege-men.

A few scantily clad (if overly fat) wenches were dancing to the bawdy tune as well, and spinning about the inn, avoiding grasping fingers.

Even better, he thought.

Odrin paused to regard her.  "Don't know, miss.  The houses of Westernos are too numerous for this soldier to recall."

Striding forward, he kicked at the horse carcass, sending the crows shrieking away in protest.  It was fresh, he noted to himself.  Discarded perhaps by a hasty messenger?

Uneasy, Odrin turned back to his young charge and her companion.  "We should seek shelter, mistress.  It won't do to be near the road at nightfall."

Slamming his now empty tankard of watered ale down on the table and loosing a belch from his broad shoulders that shook the wood planks, the dark haired man looked at the new arrival to the inn.

Disdain clearly in his eyes, the broad youth rose on wobbly knees and pushed away from the table knocking his empty tankard to the floor.

"Aye. Wha ave we ere? A frilly and frothy goldenboy. I know that man there." he bellowed loudly. "Ye be Korley Hill. A supposed Lannister by his golden hair I see, but s**t brown eyes for a Lannister is alike to bein a loose whore down in the middle. Just akin to that loose whore, everyone be knowin who ye are but they hate to be claimin to bein related."

Froth from his finished ale still glistened on his upper lip as he stood rocking side to side in his darkened corner, occasionally using the table for support.

Rheyna could not bear to look at the once magnificent creature that lay on the ground ahead. The poor horse deserved better in her mind.

Odrin is correct, we need horses. Perhaps there are a few straying about..

"Don't kick at it, please. It has suffe..."She began, before remembering that this was the man who had spared the last of his coin to prevent her losing a hand.

The mention of squid also gave her an uneasy stomach, threatening to bring back up what little she had in her stomach. She could do with a bite to eat, but first they needed to be someplace safe.

She looked toward her saviour, "what are your plans, sir?"

"Ah, well then you've heard of me. Impressive that a whoresson half Lannister still warrants more recognition than the entirety of your, well I assume that you have a house. You look familiar boy, have I @!#$ed your mother?" Korley asked, stepping in close to the drunken impertinent youth. With a quick jerk he draws his sword, ramming the pommel into the drunken Gargalen's exposed gut. He aimed a tad high, better to hit the breast bone than too low and miss. The sweet spot that left a stoic man unable to breath.

Korley

With a "sproink", the bard suddenly stopped strumming. The spinning whores slowed. A few men looked up from their mugs and murmurs. It got quiet in that moment between "...your mother" and the quick jerk.

With a sound akin to a rutting elk's call, escaping his throat, Rufus Gargalen staggered back absorbing the pommel hit, his red-veined eyes suddenly bulging, his knees wobbling.

"Sit down boy, before you vomit on my boots," Korley says. He gives the red faced Gargalen a shove and kicks his feet out from under him at the same time. "A mug of water and beer, I mean a mug of your best barkeep. And another for my drunken friend." Korley steps over the toppled Gargalen and finds a place to sit. He looks at the bard, "play something you twat," he says.

Korley and Rufus Gargalen

Without a second's hesitation, the bard picked up the tune once more, something about a bear de-flowering a virgin maid in the woods.

Korley glanced at Gargalen's shield--red cockatrice with black snake in beak on gold--what a complicated design for such a simple lout.

Staggering to a knee, Gargalen lets out a soft laugh. More of a slightly annoyed sound than of humor.

"A fine hit Sir Hill, just like yer kind to strike a man whilst they be not lookin."

Standing to his feet he wipes the blood from his elbow, now with a tear down his arm where he ran it across the inns rough planked floor.

"That twas a good one bout me mother half blood, but I be thinkin yer sister Cersei would be more to yer likin as all yer Lannister blood like. I hear yer cousin Jamie be dippin his in her often. Or he did before he was captured by King Stark. Aye a boy did that, and MY King te boot!"

Squaring his shoulders, preparing for the assault that he is sure is about to come, Gargalen smiles a swarthy grin. A single tooth missing in the front, a trophy of the last noble who thought to cross his in HIS bar.

"Ye know. I've often thought bout visiting yer poor cousin, being a widow now and all. She be needin a fresh young man like me to satisfy her, somting I'm sure me mother couldn't do for the likes of a salted dick such as yerself."

"For now, mistress?  To find someplace safe to sleep."

Regarding the nigh-abandoned road in front of him, Odrin took a moment to weigh his options.  Don't like the look of the road ahead; there be too many coming this way for my liking.  Glancing back at his young charge, Odrin was again amazed that such a frail-seeming thing had survived on the streets to near-womanhood.  There be war on all sides, and yet I'm to keep this slip of a girl safe?  Who would want to harm her?

Shaking his head, he dismissed the thought as quick as it came.  The order must have a reason for what they commanded, and it was not his place to question.

"Remaining out of sight seems the best course for now.  We have provisions enough for awhile, I say we camp tonight."

Katrina nodded at the mans wisdom, glancing at the surrounding trees and underbrush, quite different from the alleys and cobblestone streets she had grown used to. "A short walk off the road should allow us to find  a place to pitch our tents and prepare an evening meal." And get away from the stench of rotting horse flesh, she added silently to herself.

She gave  Rheyna a concerned glance, noticing her look of nausea, "You look a little pale my love, are you feeling unwell?"

Maester Belomas and Velaquo Silkblood (The Displaced Maester and the temporarily inconvenienced Mercenary Captain)

The voyage from Tarth to the mainland, across a mere narrow channel, proved difficult for Maester Belomas.

The Shy Maiden was swept off course and out to sea during an unexpected but persistent gale, then had to steer further south, off course, to avoid roaming Lyseni pirates, and even the war-fleet of Stannis Baratheon itself.

What was supposed to be an ten hour crossing turned into a month at sea. At one point the Shy Maiden picked up floating survivors from some tragic naval battle, not far from the Stepstones.

One of these stowaway survivors was a peculiar, gold-toothed, raven-haired mercenary from Myr, who called himself Velaquo and styled himself Silkblood, and who struck up conversation with Maester Belomas, as the two huddled below deck, nauseous and green-skinned from the endless roil of the Narrow Sea.

Over the next few days, the learned Maester and the flamboyant mercenary struck up a bizarre friendship. The mercenary spoke of himself mostly, and of daring do, and of conquest, and in turn, Maester Belomas schooled Velaquo in the finer points of star-navigation and wound-healing.

Later still, Velaquo spoke of Maesters, and that he had known of  mercenary companies, ones such as the Golden Company and even the Second Sons, who indeed, had employed Maesters, just as nobles Houses of Westeros did, since time immemorial. Belomas nodded and smiled at these tales, for he knew them to be true, and would proceed to tell the Myrmen of architecture and poisons and of Tarth, the Sapphire Isle, and of the Royal Houses of Westeros.

And so, the two passed the time. Nothing alike, yet circumstances had brought then together.

They grew comfortable, the mercenary captain and the Maester. For his part, Velaquo trusted the scholar implicitly with his tales of glory and ambition, and Belomas saw something in Velaquo which attracted him as well. What he, Belomas, may have become, if he had not chosen to forge his linked chain at the Citadel all those years ago, truth be told. They told each other of their current plights as well, Velaquo without an army, tail between his legs for the moment, and Belomas, unceremoniously kicked out from his post at Tarth, and sent on his merry way, ingloriously.

Strange pair, yet history was made of stranger stuff.

Strange old man, but much to teach, and guileless, thought Velaquo, I could use one someday.

Too clever by half this one, overly ambitious and bloodthirsty, thought Belomas, but charismatic and willful

Finally, the Shy Maiden sailed into brackish Blackwater Bay and docked at King's Landing.

Maester Belomas and Velaquo Silkblood disembarked. It was obvious that a great battle had recently been fought here beside the walls, and on the bay. There was tension in the air, and wisps of smoke everywhere.

It was time for good-byes.

"Tell me something, boy." Korley stands back up, clearly annoyed. "What is it about this life that so makes you crave death? Surely, there is no finer piece of quim in Westeros than Cersei's lady garden. But being a north man perhaps the only lady garden you've ever entered was attached to a goat or a muzzled dog?" Korley draws out his sword, a deliberate action. "And verily Robb Stark captured my cousin but he did it with twenty thousand men. How many did they have to bury?"

"But if you are so keen to die let's get this over with. I am far more interested in several cups of wine or ale and a toss with a fat whore."

"I'll still be having that drink, barkeep"

Taking a staggering step toward his now overturned chair, Sir Gargalen reached for the haft of his morning star, an impressive piece of metal that looked as if it took normal men two hands to wield, which he lifted easily with one even in his inebriated state.

"Robb Stark? That whelp of a boy? You speak of him as if I care a whit about that sod, clearly ye dunna know where me shield raises. What are ye drunk? No? I am. Now where did that d**ned shield go?"

He leans over to fetch his fallen shield that skittered under the table. The markings of a cockatrice with black snake in its beak on a field of red on gold emblazoned on its face with several battle scars clearly seen through it. He tips suddenly and tumbles to the floor with a profound "oomf"

"Foul git hittin me from behind again are ye? I woulda thought the Lannister's held more pride than that. Ye just... ye just... d**n the floor. STOP MOVING!" he bellows mightily. A flagon of ale sitting on a table nearby teetered to the edge and he deftly snatched it up and drained it to the protest of its owner and he began to sing his own tune to the bard strumming his music.

"That night I rode in glorious style,
And other things besides,
And on her lily white stomach, Boys,
I had such lovely rides
But when I woke next morning, Boys,
My instrument was sore
As if I had been using it
On the keyhole in the door.

Sleep sounded good right now, her aching bones longed to lie down. So much so that she didn't care to eat, the image of the dead horse still fresh in her mind.

"I'll be fine dear, it'll pass. A bite to eat and a nights rest should do the trick."

She noticed her feet were becoming heavy, so she willed herself onwards. Determined not to show any sign of weakness. After all, she'd grown up in the streets, had been through worse..

Odrin, Kat, Rheyna

Shelter for the night, proved to be a gnarled, twisted dwarf oak, standing next to an abandoned, overturned wagon about a half-mile from the thoroughfare, in a otherwise featureless, windswept terrain.

A broken and useless thing of smashed wheels and sharp planks, but serviceable as a shield form the elements (and back support), at least for one night.

They ate a cold loaf of bread, some crab-apples and hard cheese, and washed it down with water.

As they ate, Odrin studied the two women. Indeed, the one called 'Fingerdance' had a tiny scar or birthmark, he could not be sure which, above her left eye. Interestingly enough, he also noticed that Kat had a tiny blotch (or scratch?) above her left eye as well.

For a moment Odrin wondered whether he had the right girl in tow. How many young, orphaned, girls in Westeros dyed their hair, and had a small mark above their left eye? Hundreds? Thousands?

He cast aside his doubts once more. The Bearded Priests had specifically mentioned Barrowton as a potential starting place for his search. This had to be her.....Right?

Wait, what was that? The sound of clinking mail and horse snorts. Odrin tensed and looked toward the road once more. Kat and Rheyna heard it as well.

It was evening, but the moon was out, a huge, liquid ball of cheap-gold hanging on the horizon, so they could see some distance away.

Riders.

A half dozen, mailed and armed, slowly making their way in the illuminated darkness. If Odrin could make them out, he knew that their little trio could probably be spotted in turn.

Kat set up in surprise at the foreign sounds, pulling her head from Rheyna's lap where her hair was being gently caressed moments earlier, the sound of the wind through the leaves having lulled her into a state of half consciousness.

"To still be traveling at this hour, their business must be urgent indeed," She whispered to her companions, quietly notching an arrow into her bow. "If we don't antagonize them, chances are they'll hurry on to their destination and not waste time with simple travelers." Deep down she doubted the conviction of her words, and was once again profoundly grateful to have the hulking mound of muscle beside her in the darkness.

Startled by Kat's sudden alertness, Rheyna looked up nervously. She too could make out the shapes of the approaching riders.

"We should lie low, hope they don't spot us. They seem to be making haste."

Although, we still could do with some horses. Half a dozen of them, three of us. Only one of us is decent in direct combat and we don't have enough time to trap them. Looks like we should pass this unlikely opportunity...

Odrin's whisper was urgent.  "Put your backs to the wagon, hide your silhouettes!"

He was grateful that they had not started a fire this eve, with so little to burn on these plains.  He itched to retrieve his axe, Ashreaver, from where he had reverently set her against the cart, but knew that the sudden movement might draw unwanted attention.  Instead, he hulked silently in the shadows, ready to spring to the defense of his charges if the need arose.

With a silent not Katrina lowered herself closer to the ground, being careful not to actually touch the rickety wagon remains, well aware the memorable noise aged timber made when forced to support a sudden weight.

Slowly she tilted her head to the side, straining to pick out any snippets of conversation between the riders the wind chose to carry towards them, her hands still grasping her bow and arrow tightly, the moonlight gently illuminating the projectiles fletching.

Quickly and without hesitation Rheyna obeyed, gliding to the floor and loosening one of her knives, whilst also trying to make out any conversation the riders may be having.

Although at that pace, she didn't think they'd be saying anything. If they were they would surely need to shout in order to be heard above their horses hooves pounding the ground.
