Dwarf Fortress!

Anyone else play? I ran into it about a year ago and was too intimidated by the UI to do anything productive. But after their most recent update, I downloaded it and used an intro guide. I'm thoroughly impressed by the depth of the game, and the chaos that can erupt at any moment.

Just tried playing around with it.  What a labour of love that must have been - its huge!

The world I generated ended up with > 100000 historical figures.

Browsing through the histories can be fun. I recall one angry god who turned one fallen servant into a wereturtle, and another into a weresloth. Apparently he had some taste for slow-moving animals.
