Random, Interesting Fact
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:58:24 AM »
In 2008, five European scientists announced that cattle and deer around the world align their bodies in roughly a north-south direction when grazing or resting.

German zoologist Sabine Begall studied thousands of Google Earth images and discovered that both types of animals appear to align their bodies with magnetic north. The conclusion “appears to be quite clear-cut from the data,” observed ornithologist Wolfgang Wiltschko.

“It boggles the mind that no one — herdsman, rancher, or hunter — had noticed this before,” writes ethologist Jonathan Balcombe. “What else are we failing to notice?”

There's obviously a massive conspiracy covering up the fact that all these "herd animals" are in fact a massive hive intelligence that has been guiding human evolution and thought since we were but hairy apes swinging around in the darkest jungles of Africa throwing bananas and less savory objects at each other.  With this in mind, it becomes plain to the eye that all these accidents involving people hitting deer or being waylaid by herds of cattle on the road are measures taken by our unknown overlords to prevent us from throwing of their evil yoke...

Interesting theory. I was going to go with UFOs using their tractor beams to face them all north because, as most people already know, UFOs only land east/west and they love to cow tip.

Random fact: Humans cannot lick their own elbows.

The average human cannot. There are individuals flexible enough to do so.

Random Fact: 3/4ths of the people reading your random fact just tried to lick their elbow.

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

I'm that 1/6, but only because I spent an entire week as a child trying to do it... I don't know if that makes me better or worse... :/

I absolutely love this chart!

from this article http://www.gnomestew.com/tools-for-gms/quick-and-dirty-overland-encounter-list-template

I want to figure out what the odds are when rolling a 1d6 (hi/low) and a 1d10 in the place of a 1d20 are!

Um...the same as when rolling it normally? 1/6 and 1/10, respectively...

Unless you're meaning something else.

We used to roll a a 1d6 for the ten's digit, 1-3 is 0 and 4-6 is 1, and then the 1d10 for the one's digit.

So a 1d6, 1d10 roll of 3, 8 would be an 8. A 5, 8 would be 18...6,1 would be 11. So a Nat 20 would be 1d6, 4-6 and a 1d10 thrown a 0.

We played Palladium, we liked throwing dice. And when there was a critical parry to be made or some other high value roll, we could roll one of the dice first and to see how big of a chance there was to succeed with the second roll. So if I just got whacked big time that could kill me and they rolled an 18 or something, then I could roll my 1d6 first to see if I even got into the teens. If I did, then there was a bigger drum roll for the 1d10 roll to see if I parried.

I wonder if the odds were better that way or if we were fooling ourselves.

The odds were the same as rolling a d20, it's like rolling 2d10 for a percentile... Though, if you had an extremely lucky d6 that you always used it might skew the results subtly.

And that's why you use Game Science dice, if you truly want randomness. Of course, true randomness isn't always in the best interests of gameplay, as utilizing said dice has shown recently.

After 70 hours of straight mathematics, most of which you wouldn't understand because they were just numbers and lines on a dry erase board created to make me feel smarter, I have deduced that Pariah is correct about the dice being the same odds. However much I hoped and dreamed that the odds were better using 2 dice, my thoughts were based on fallacy. I have come to the realization that most of my youth was based on a lie. I am slowly coming to terms with that, however, my counselor says she is hesitant about making any predictions on my recovery.

Please wish me well. Thank goodness I still have the realness of Santa Clause to grasp on else I would be lost in the abyss.
