Seen a couple posts about the history of the site so I figured I would shed a little light on the subject. I am stalling between homework assignments so this is as good as anything.
1993 - Got my first intel based machine and played my first Ad&d game. Was always into fantasy though and had books but never played.
1994 - First webpage was
Rockfury's Final Stand based on a favorite dwarf (duh) character. Wasn't much to it. Your basic black background, animated gifs to include blood dripping horizontal rules, and a metallica (enter the sandman) midi file to play in the background. Started the PBeM and uploaded The Land of Aros for the first time in its digital format. Relatively unchanged world since then I am embarrassed to say. Has all the threads as well. Played off and on through 1998. This webpage was ugly for quite a few years and had a number of stupid things on it. (Couldn't find it on my old server even through the web archives to embarass myself so I won't go into the pages I had.)
1997-1998 or so.
http://strolen.cjb.net/ Started to realize I really enjoyed making the webpages on top of the PBeM. And so started my experimental stage. Played with Java, Javascrips, Applets, flash, blah blah. You name it, it was there at some point. Went through a prank stage as well and collected pages of those fun little executes that would open your cd-rom, make your screen into a jigsaw puzzle, etc., etc., Got into my reverse engineering phase as well and was even writing some code in assembly for fun. What a geek! Didn't get very far though. You can see all of that mess still.
(Some graphics are missing, don't know where they ended up.)
2000 - Had a get together with some friends and discussed my great idea about this site.
http://www.strolen.com/FUN/try.html A few months later we had this
http://www.strolen.com/FUN/strolen_old/ and at that same time I started learning PHP and converted it to this
http://www.strolen.com/FUN/strolen_old/index.php3 which then grew into this
http://www.strolen.com/FUN/strolen_old2/index.php3 and was slowly becoming useable.
THEN we found Kate, our artist and she initially showed me this:
http://www.strolen.com/FUN/kate/strolen1.html which I then had her turn into this:
http://www.strolen.com/FUN/elder/ which stuck around in various guises until about the end of 2001-2002 (I think) when it turned into what you see know. It was a pretty quick change from the blue to the brown, not much has changed since the initial overhaul except little tweeks.
That is about the life of the site as I can remember and have time to mess with right now. Sort of a fun ride through memory lane for me too. Hope you enjoy the little peek.
