Overhauling other peoples abandoned subs?
« on: July 11, 2011, 12:33:36 PM »
After browsing through some more of the Citadel;s lower rated subs I noticed many that had a lot of under developed potential. (Example: http://strolen.com/viewing/Arwin_Lightfoot ) that was never fully realized by the original author and now lie abandoned to decay having never achieved their rightful glory.

In short do people think it would be acceptable/fun for such subs (those with a rating below 2.5 and over a year or so old)  to be "available" to anyone that was interested to take it, give it an overhaul and resubmit it?

(Hmm this could also be the subject of a quest too now that I think about it...)

Not so sure on these ideas, but I'm going to throw them out anyway.

What about low votes and/or extremely inactive authors' submissions go into the wiki-style range? I'm not sure if wiki style posts keep a history of edits, though that would be nice in these situations.

Or maybe certain really old posts (low votes/ inactive authots again) can be requested to  change hands, or have a mod add a new author to it, so that it can be edited. It would be interesting to have a list of subs that are "up for grabs" for those of us who would like a foundation to work from.

I still like the idea of implementing some sort of raffle system, the dice game is a step towards it but I'll say it here now: This is probably a bad idea, as we promote freely sharing ideas, but what about raffling off subs/ideas/hooks for expansion, and if done within a time limit and reach a certain vote (3?), they grant extra xp? Just a few ideas. But I do like the thought of revisiting old subs, good call, Silv.

I think the easiest approach is simply to create a new sub and add a II to the title and leave the original linked to the new version.

Val has pointed out a very good solution... I keep trying to turn the Citadel into an arcade and he suggests an already existing option. I think this is a great idea. Should we have a freetext for overhauled subs? Just in case one would care to browse them? Just more ideas.

redux?

I agree with leaving the original untouched. Imagine if you left the site for a year or two and then decided to come back and found that some of your subs were claimed and edited by the site.

Honestly If I wrote a sub that was below the 2.5 mark and hadn't found a way to improve it after 6 months and someone else came along (where I was here or not) and made it into a 3-5 vote sub I'd prolly give them a vote and HOH for their efforts in making something worthy out of something I failed to deliver on.

But aye I see your point, people care about their ideas, even the ones that keel over dead and never develop beyond the "could be cool" stage, doing a version 2.0 enhancement with a link back to the original works just as well for me. :)

There are two options as I see them, given our current technology on the site.

1) Simply add ideas to the bottom of the post.  I mean, that is what it is there for.  These are not simple comments.  They are brand new things about the sub that could be done.

If your add idea happens to be a complete rehaul of the sub, then... okay.

2) Make a new sub with the same name with the ending -redux or II (or appropriate number).  This is your chance to take that idea and run with it hard.  Make sure to link the original sub to the new one and old to new.   The redux (or something) freetext might not be a bad addition.  This one gets dicey iof your person is comming back or has touchy issues, but it does work quite nicely... and you the rewritr get your credit in votes, ratings, being able to find your work, and such.

Having been attacked by the work and afk monsters as well as hit over the head by Mathom himself. I stumble on this as soon as I log in. I am in absolute agreement with this as I did it in the past with Cowards Lot - The Bow of Caldwell and Bone Bow

I commented on the post by fenix fire and suggested a few changes and when they were not brought to the light I took it on myself to create a new post giving credit to the original sub and author. I don't see why it has to be the same title with a II or x2 or Part Deux added to it, however if it were under the pretense of yes we are redoing this sub then I can see it going forth with the same title. It could get confusing after some time though.

Although I do like the redeux freetext idea brought up by Moon. It would make it simple and far easier for us to search for other titles that are redone.

Just my thoughts.

Indeed the redux is an excellent solution, in my original inquiry I was more discussing the "permission/social acceptability" of the concept rather then the specific mechanics of how it would work.

I agree with Val's take on the idea.

As for "Touchy issues" and the like: Outright stealing a sub is plain wrong. There are myriad laws against plagiarism.
Improving a sub, on the other hand, combined with a credit where credit is due, is decent and alright.

In the past I have had want to be improvers send me messages in which they ask me if it is okay. Whether an active user or not, I think that is quite polite and makes me happy.

Logging in and seeing some other dude claiming this or that sub for his own, "the grand improved version" of his lordship the excellency, without a thank you, a linkback, or even an acknowledgement there is another sub... Well, to me that is pure theft.
